Kentucky Golf

Greetings all - I currently live in Virginia, but if everything goes as planned I will be moving to Lexington, KY in two weeks. I grew up around there & graduated from Paris HS, but have been away for about 30 years.

A cool thing is as a veteran green fees at Lexington city courses are only $12 & just $26 with cart. That is amazing compared to the golf prices in the DC area.

I just looked GolfWeek's list of top KY courses "You can play". I know two of these are in the Lexington, area....Kearney Hill and Cherry Blossom. Any feedback on any other courses in the Lexington area?

  • 1. Lassing Pointe, Union (m)
  • 2. Heritage Hill, Shepherdsville (m)
  • 3. Cherry Blossom GC, Georgetown (m)
  • 4. Kearney Hill Golf Links, Lexington (m)
  • 5. Wasioto Winds GC, Pineville (m)

Also, I would be cool to play with some KY GolfWRXers.

Houston Oaks is in Paris, KY. and is definitely an honorable track. Who knows, you may run into some old high school friends! My favorites in the Lexington area are Kearney Hill, Cherry Blossom, Houston Oaks, and Big Blue, and definitely Old Silo in Mt. Sterling. I don't have any knowledge about the private courses. The Lexington area is, IMO, just beautiful. Good luck to you in your move.

Picadome in Lexington is a good option. Old Silo might be an option.

I have heard Old Silo was a nice course.

I played Houston Oaks a few years ago with my uncle. That is a very nice course :}

I had some time so I got in 9 holes at Cherry today. I know I missed out on the toughest holes (16, 17, 18) but the front nine was enjoyable. The greens are wonderful and the layout is varied with enough elevation change to make some of the holes play longer than they are. It is pretty wide-open and would be playable by golfers of all skill levels. The dude in the pro shop was a bit of a turd but everyone has bad days so I'll give him a pass.

If I had another chance, I'd check out Kearney for sure. I was in their parking lot but had to go to an impromptu meeting so I couldn't stay but it looks wonderful!

Lassing Pointe is a city parks course in Union and is normally in really good shape. Feature hole is probably number 18 which has a green that is 106 yards long.

Heritage Hill is always in great shape tee to green. Greens can get a little beat up due to the fact that a high percentage of golfers seem unable to repair ball marks on the greens. The greens will probably be the slowest of any courses listed here but generally hey roll well. Signature holes would be number 11 and 18. Would have loved to have the contract for the cart paths there. It seems like a half mile from the green at 10 the tee box of 11.

You experienced some holes at Cherry Blossom. One of my favorite courses in the Lexington area as well as Kearney which is also a city parks course.

Any good updates on on central KY courses? I only got in one round last year and that was at Kearney Hill which always seems in great shape. I just got a 10 round pass for Cherry Blossom.

Heritage Hill was in good shape last fall. The weird drop shot par three that seems out of place was stressed a bit. Looked like they fought poor air circulation on that green due to where it is located. Other than that no complaints at all about the course, serious complaints about my game that day.

I got out Sunday at Cherry Blossom on Sunday for my first round in 2020. The course was in wonderful condition for this time of year. As for my game.....shot a 92...which is not bad considering I only played once in 2019.

Anyone else made it out this year?

I’m down in South Central Ky (Bowling Green area) and I’ve played 6 times so far since first weekend in February. It’s still winter golf (no grass, greens inconsistent, etc.) but it’s been fun to get out early and get started. Can’t wait for Spring to get here and get back to normal golf and see where my game is...because so far it’s where I left off last fall which is good (handicap dropping).

Nice. KP’s course is fun to play when it’s in good shape. I played there back in October and back 9 was shut down and they had recently punched the greens so it was no fun.

I've got a few buddies on here that don’t post much from this same area.

This past summer I played out at Glasgow CC. That could be a real nice course if they would cut down a bunch of trees.

Every now and again my buddy and I will get a wild hair to go play at Barren.

Late October seems to be the best time to play at KP's. Zoysia hasn't turned yet, it's dry for the most part and the greens have healed up some from the summer beating.

Glasgow Cc “Willow Oaks” now...could be a really nice course. In my opinion they keep the greens way too fast for a course like it is. And yes they could do some general maint around the course to really make it nice. It just went private to semi private-public to now full private again in the last 16 months. Barren was actually in great shape last year, best it’s been in the 7 yrs I’ve been playing golf.

maybe holler at me this summer and we can get some guys together somewhere local to all of us.

It’s funny you know that, the whole reason they went down initially. There were some talks of the City buying it, but the private guy bought it before it went down that road.

Really wish it would have happened though, because I would have had a new office location ?.

I know that because I am married to the lady that sold them the furniture in it.

If you follow for very long and read about why private clubs close it is often because they take on debt, usually doing something like building a big clubhouse or a pool or dumping money into the tennis courts. Just like personal finances, stay out of debt and spend near your means.

I think they have a nice enough course, they could just spend some money on a tree program and greatly improve the look and health of their course. The best green on the place was the new one on the front that wasn't buried in trees. Airflow and drainage. Improving the practice area would be down the list but it would still be on my list.
