Lamest Masters

playa

Recommended Posts

We all know The Masters has been the scene of some of the greatest and most exciting moments in golf history (Jacks magical back 9 in 86, Tigers chip in on 16, Bubbas 40 yard hook wedge in the playoff etc etc, but what was the lamest Masters over the years? The tournament that just bombed as a golfing spectacle. For me there are 2.

1. Normans epic collapse in 96. To watch a great player throw away a 6 shot lead to lose by 5 shots was pitiful. This

2. 2003. Watching 2 journeymen try to outchoke each other was not befitting of a Masters. Falling over the line with a 3 putt bogey in a playoff is not the statement of a champion.

That's a good question...

Because it's the Masters I don't think there will ever be a tournament that just sucks....but some years are better than others.

The years that Zach Johnson and Mike Weir won weren't super exciting (except for them). Two relatively short hitters laying up on par 5s and wedging ANGC to death...

Still, happy for both of them.

Poor Immelman. A Masters Champion that was playing a Web.com event last year an hour from where I live. (Maybe that was two years ago)

Immelman, Weir, Baker Finch, Lyle, Duval. Greatness can be fleeting. Just reinforces how truly great Jack and Tiger were to be so dominant for so long.

I love the short hitters who play position golf and out duel the big hitters. The wedge it to 13 and 15 guys are some of my favorites. That's the way I play and I like seeing it on tv.

That being said, any year that ends with a Weir-Mattiace battle, even including the drama of a playoff, is not a good year.

2014 when Bubba had it in hand through the entire back 9 was pretty boring. I remember I had a tournament that day and had to DVR it, I kept fast forwarding waiting for some good competition or drama and essentially ended up fast forwarding through the whole thing.

The Immelman and Weir Masters, to me, are only 'lame' because they haven't done squat since. Yet, if anything, they will play in this tournament until they don't want to any longer.

not for anything but if I could win a 'lame' Masters I would die a pretty happy dude.

Being Canadian and left-handed weirs win was one I'll remember.not such a fan of the guy but its importance to Canadian golf in general was huge in my opinion .may not have been the most exciting golf for many but for one week at Augusta when it mattered he was the best of the field.enjoy the first 2days of the masters mike, you deserve to be at the table as much as the dude sitting next to you.

Ok let's give Weir a break, he did win twice after the Masters win. He has won a Tour Championship and a WGC event. This isn;t too bad for a career.

  • Wins – 8
  • 2nd-place finishes – 10
  • 3rd-place finishes – 8
  • Top 10 finishes – 69
  • Top 25 finishes – 140

To be fair, I'm Canadian and 2003 was a boring Masters!

Last year's was pretty lame to me. When Justin Rose hit to the middle of the green on 12 Sunday I turned off the tv. I knew then he didn't have the mustard to make up the difference in shots, nor provide any drama at all. Who the hell hits to the middle of the green on 12 on Sunday when they are a few shots behind? Nutless. Sad really.

Well, in fairness, it is a rather challenging tee shot.

Finished t3 at the US open in '03 too. Now obviously he is terrible right now but back in '03 he was quite good.

I am not Zach Johnson guy and will agree that his win was different, but at least the rest of this career has backed up that win. Unlike Immelman

The most entertaining parts of the Weir and Immelman wins were the after round press conferences watching two vrown men blubbering like babies after coming second. Gold.

Yep, you can guarantee that if it were Phil in that spot he would have laid it all on the line and attacked the pin, like his unforgettable shot from the pine straw. Not many guys would try that shot in a practice round, never mind being in contention on Sunday. Phil is not my favorite golfer, but imo he is the greatest champion for the style and cajones he shows down the stretch.

Sandy Lyle also won an Open Championship, 4 regular PGA Tour events including the Players, and 16 European Tour events over a 13 year period. Not Jack or Tiger, but 2 majors is pretty damn good company.

Not possible he pulled it a little? I'm being serious. Did the conversation with his caddie indicate he wasn't going for it? I don't recall

Duval also had a stellar 3 or 4 years. Wasn't dissing Lyle, just using him as an example of how great players can lose their games. I've heard from tour guys here in Oz who played in tournaments with him back in the day that he was one of the purest ball strikers on tour.

I didn't like 2009, couldn't get into it when it was between Cabrera, Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry. Perry blew it and Cabrera got very lucky by bouncing off a tree.

It did have Tiger vs Phil though iirc, I think that was the one they were drawn together. Both were too far back in the end but absolutely scorched the front nine and at least in Mickelson's case was contending for a while.

2007 was the lamest set-up, the weather didn't help but there's no way the Masters winner should finish +1. It summed it up when Zach Johnson won it laying up on every par 5 all week.
