Golf Ball Suggestions

Teekman

Recommended Posts

So I currently game the Titleist Pro V1X and after reading the Snell Article am looking for a new golf ball because I feel I'm over spinning the ball on my irons.

Little background:

- I swing 115 mph with the driver with a quick tempo and fade bias.

- I prefer the harder feeling golf balls hence the Pro V1X

I'm thinking about trying the Chrome Soft first but heading to NCAA tennis tournament so will let the WRX community give me suggestions before I purchase anything.

chrome soft is not a harder feeling ball. Try the b330 or the snell mtb or wilson fg tour x or rife v motion

Alright, that's an extended list, the Rife caught my attention cause I've never heard of it. Probably give that a try.

What shaft and flex for iron? What is your driver spin rate with X, or do you know? I second b330 and new XV Srixon word of mouth is great.

I play project X 6.5 and Oban Devotion 05 Tipped 1.5''. Spin driver 2,900 - 3,300 on good strikes.

So I just switched to the B330 from the Pro V1X. I felt like I was spinning my mid irons a little too much plus the height I was getting off of all my clubs was more than ideal.

So I picked up some used b330's 2014-present and began the test.

Chipping, the balls perform the same, not difference between the V1X and B330.

Pitching/wedges, I feel like the check and release is very similar but the B330 flies a few yards farther, maybe 10% from 30 yards right up to full gap wedges. This may be due to what seems to be less spin than the X as well as a slightly lower launch. I also have no problem really trapping it and spinning it hard when I need to, but what I really like is that I can smooth it out at impact and get the ball to run and roll with very little check.

The ball performs very similarly to the X off of the high lofted irons but the trajectory is a little bit stronger, distance is similar.

Off of the mid and long irons the ball comes off like a bullet. Where the X tends to start lower and climb with the mid and long irons, seemingly pulling a string and falling from the sky with a hard check, the B330 comes off hard in a much more consistent arcing trajectory and lands at less of an angle with a little more rollout but I'm proably carrying the B about 7 yards farther off the mid and long irons which means I can hit a half club less which makes up for the lower spin.

Off the driver and 3 wood it's just solid, strong trajectory, low spin, very stable. The main positive about the Pro v1x for me is downwind I can launch this thing a mile in the air and it just goes like a sail... The main positive of the B330 is that it seems much more stable in the wind.

Both are predictable.

Putting: The pro V1x seems to roll a bit heavier, it sticks to the ground and tracks well. The B330 feels good off the putter but has taken me some time to get used to. it seems a bit more jumpy off the putter and it looks like it takes a bit longer to get rolling. The B330 just seems to behave like its a touch lighter if that makes any sense, it's hard to quantify. It's a heavy ball off teh irons, but it feels lighter off the putter.

With that said I can putt fine with it, perhaps it's just a matter of being different than the ball I've rolled for 10 years plus.

Feel... This is where I like the B330 the best... it feels more dense.. like there's more weight towards the cover... It's not a hard feel, just more substantial and a bit heavy but it's a feel that I love. Impact is more jarring than the X.

For me the stability and feel off the clubs more than makes up for the putting performance, with more putting practice the differences shouldn't be an issue at all.

This has me excited. I found 2014 B330 and B330s locally for $29. I have adequate distance (with any ball), can spin shots well, and can get along just fine with a Top Flite Gamer. Was looking for something that would give me a little more around the green than the Gamer for more serious play and felt the B330 was my ball. Picked up 4 boxes of the B330 and 1 of the B330s. I can hit it high and can get a little too much spin if I'm not careful which makes me lean toward the B330 (I also like the black numbers better than red).

I took a pre-2014 B330s, a 2014 B330, and a circa-2014 Z-Star to the chipping/putting green last night. Felt spin was excellent on all of them with B330 maybe rolling out ever so slightly than the B330s or Z-Star with chips and pitches up to 30 yards but also felt like it had very predictable bite with option to hit long rolling chip shots if desired. Trajectory felt like you'd be able to hit low wedge shots fairly easily. Felt great putting.

Obviously haven't gotten them out to the tee box or with the irons but I don't think the B330s is going to be able to offer me that much extra in the short game department and the the B330 fits me more off the tee and with my irons. I think I'm going to take the B330s back and stock up on all the B330 I can find.
