Nike dropping golf equipment (merged)

Just hitting the wires. Will remain in apparel/footwear. Lots of interesting names that will be looking for new club deals...

I am not trying to be a total d!ick ( i did just buy my first three nike clubs ever), but this is great news for Rory. Still the best soft goods in the business, and now can probably play anything he wants, still have a nice fat contract.

Holy hell. There's going to be an incredible bidding war for Tiger and Rory.

Have to day this was inevitable. Without Tiger, and his fanboys in full worship mode no one buys their stuff any longer. He had to be responsible for 90% of their golf sales at his Nike peak.

Shoes and apparel Nike does well. Equipment, not so much.

I'd imagine there is some type of offset language in the contracts, e.g. anything Rory gets on a new club deal reduces Nike's commitment by some pre-determined amount.

I don't know anywhere near enough about contract law to speculate on that, but it is certainly an interesting question. Anyone?

Beyond not making money in equipment, this move seems like it could really boost Nike's ability to get top names on apparel deals. I'm sure there are a lot more players who would be happy to take Nike's money on an apparel deal as long as they can play someone else's clubs...

They would have guaranteed market share, just need to restructure how the business is run. Whenever I play golf I see more TM equipment in random bags than any other brand, rarely any Nike any more.

Or they could just sell shoes and shirts....in the end I couldn't care less what they do. It's just interesting to speculate.

So I guess the current Nike staffers will keep wearing Nike clothing/shoes, but switch to other equipment. Will be interesting to see what happens there, and whether some players want to depart from Nike completely.

Agree that it's interesting to speculate--frankly my day was a little boring until this thread popped up! Disagree that it makes any sense whatsoever for Nike to buy another club manufacturer like TM. I can't see Nike wanting to take on the headache of trying to make money on equipment using someone else's logo when they just announced that they're getting out of the equipment business themselves.
