outer wrist injury

Hey everyone,

I was testing out some irons about 2 weeks ago and in the process injured my left wrist (I swing right handed). I must have hit the mat hard on a swing or something because now it hurts when I fully hinge my wrist in the back swing. It hurts on the pinky side but only in the wrist hinge. I have been icing it but I still cant golf so I just bought a brace yesterday to see if it helps at all. It's especially frustrating because my special ordered irons just came in and I can't use them. If any of you stereotypical golfing doctors are out there or someone who has had something similar, is this a common injury at all and what can I do to treat it?

Get an mri...could be TFCC related

I have been fighting a similar injury. Jammed my left wrist hitting an eight iron on an uphill lie. Took a huge divot. The injury was ten months ago. I wore a wrist brace for eight months. Now I play without the brace, but the wrist is still tender. I had an orthopedics look at the injury. He found a small separation between bones in my wrist that would likely get better with time.

Wrist injuries / strains are common but when treated improperly can linger for weeks or longer.

Go see a doctor.

Practice putting for a month....

I have ulnar sided weakness and pain. I think it's a TFCC tear. Beating balls at the range gave me a sore wrist and it all came tumbling down on the range when I hit my hybrid super fat which sent a sharp jolt of pain through my arm originating from my wrist. Cannot swing a golf club and it's been 3+ weeks. There is instability and pain when I twist/bend it in a certain way. I am positive for the TFCC push test you can find on youtube. I can't even squirt soap out of the pump with one hand because that is exactly the motion that causes the most pain. It was painful for the first week but the pain went away when I was in a resting state so I thought it was just a sprain and will get better. The instability hasn't improved one bit. I can do all normal activities but swinging the golf club is out of the question. Been chipping and putting for 3+ weeks and going to see the orthopod this Friday. I fear the worst.

Since this posting I've been very lucky and have seen major improvements. I believe it was just some swelling in the tendons and both icing and ibuprofen have done wonders. Maybe it's just being young that has made it work but using anti inflammatory meds consistently has really helped. If it hadn't healed in a few more days I would have gone to get some MRI's or something but I'm just lucky I guess. Thanks for the advice and I hope everybody else that doesn't get theirs figured out soon can come to a speedy recovery. A few short weeks without golf was painful and I can't imagine what many of you are going through. Good Luck!

Ditto. Did it playing tennis, fell overand my watch strap hurt my wrist quite badly.

Wore a wrist brace (with another support over it) all last golf season. This worked well but it probably limited my wrist hinge a little, which must have been no harm at all!! :)
