Was there two weeks ago and they are beat up very badly. No. 3 is completely gone, and they've punched them again. Kinda makes you wonder why they don't recontour and regrass to Bermuda

Two words: Crenshaw Bentgrass. I guess if they had Crenshaw Bermuda, they would have bermuda greens. The course where I play has Crenshaw Bent, and this summer has really been hard on them. They look worse than they have in the 6 years I have been a member. On the other hand, I was at the Duke course last weekend, and their bermuda practice green looked so good, I wasn't sure it was real.

Fellas,

A bit off topic here but a bunch of locals on this thread so I thought I'd ask. I'm looking to play Dormie and a couple other clubs in October. We're staying at Pinehurst but want to play afternoon golf off property. We don't have a car so what is the most reliable mode of transportation to and from other courses? Is Uber a viable option locally?

Last time I was down there I'm pretty sure Uber was not available(May of this year). I was not looking for rides to the golf course but a ride back to the condo after some drinking so could also have been alcohol induced human error.

I did not have any issue getting a cab though.

That's really surprising to hear. Played a CGA event in late May of this year and the greens were beautiful. Rolled true with plenty of break. Didn't take many pictures that day.

I am heading to Pinehurst the second week in October and was considering playing Dormie Club but I am hoping that the greens will have recovered by then, has anyone played there recently? The other option we were looking at was Pine Needles but I was not sure what the conditions would be like with their new greens.

Pine needles just opened up about a week ago and heard the greens are beautiful. Greens at Mid Pines and Tobacco Road this weekend were perfect as well.

I stayed at Pine Needles two weeks ago. Mid Pines was in great shape. The greens were a little sandy the first day, but overnight rain solved that problem. They were perfect the next day.

We were a large group - 20+ foursomes - and were the first group allowed to play Pine Needles. The greens looked great from the fairways. Once you got on the green, they were surprisingly soft for new greens. Very sandy and hadn't grown in all the way yet, but but still rolled surprisingly well. In another month or two they should be great.

I would play Pine Needles or Mid Pines any day over Dormie. I know I'm in the minority, but I've never really cared for Dormie all that much. Course is OK, facilities are lacking, and the staff is rude, at best.

We are scheduled to play Mid Pines, Number 8 and Tobacco Road and I was looking for a fourth course to round out the trip, I have played both Pine Needles and Dormie on a trip last fall and liked both courses but want to make sure the greens are in decent shape..

If I had only one course to play in Pinehurst it would be Mid Pines.

No word on the greens at Dormie? We're heading down next weekend, so time is running out to swap a different course into the rotation.

Always call and ask?/ They might be honest with you.. If you think they are lying then I would switch out.. Play one of the other many great courses in the area.

Don't chance it. Switch it and play Pine Needles instead, in addition to the rest of your lineup.

We've got Pine Needles in the rota already. Tobacco Road Friday, Mid Pines and Pine Needles Saturday, and Dormie Sunday.

My bad, I think someone else above (lefty canuck maybe) was trying to decide between those two.

Still, I'd seriously consider switching out. You have a great rota IF Dormie is in shape. Swap it out for Talamore, or #5, or even southern pines. Or heck, a second round on Mid Pines.

Based on your courses, I assume you are not staying onsite at the resort, so advance tee times on #4 or #8 are probably out.

I gave them a call. The guy who answered said they had minor problems on 2 of the greens, but the rest completely recovered from the summer heat wave. Another week and a half of milder temperatures ahead, they should be good for us. We're gonna stick it out. I'll post an update after the trip.

Your a lot braver than I am... I would add a 2nd at mid pines or add southern pines or talamore... Good luck!

Given the dodgy history of conditioning at Dormie Club over the years. I would temper the answer given by them with a huge grain of salt. You know all the greens were awful a couple weeks ago. And they admit two of them are still not recovered (I'd read that as dead). Take that answer as the absolute best spin possible on conditions there.

So what's the big draw at Dormie? Famous designers? Caddies? The fact it was originally supposed to be some kind of uber-exclusive rich guy's private club? I'd rather play any of half a dozen courses in that area in good condition than play Dormie with crap greens. A second round at either Pine Needles or Mid-Pines would never go amiss, a 36-hole day at Pine Needles was one of the most enjoyable days of my golf life to date.

Played there 2 weeks ago. The greens were not near good shape. They had been punched and and top-dressed. That said, we had a great time and only 3 putted one time. The rest of the course was in great shape. They cut the price we paid from 80 to 50 dollars. I think the rates have gone up since then. They are switching to Bermuda next summer.
