Custom shop the button back or tour Betti?

So I'm in a bind. I love the feel and weight of my buttonback Newport but want a sight line added to the top, not flange. Also need it a few degrees flatter. To have this I'd have to send it to Cameron and wait over a month to get it back. Would cost me about $75 total with shipping.

Here's where it gets hard. I live 45 minutes from the studio B for Bettinardi and have been there before. I just called and they can get me in Wednesday And they have a tour putter there in the same anser style with the top sight line already for $1200

With golf season in Illinois, I only have 2 months of good golf left. Should I sell the button back and get the tour Betti, or go for the much cheaper, but have to wait over a month option and send it in to the custom shop?? Can't afford both, or I would. Help!

Keep the Newport and get a dot, not a line.

And go for the putter fitting to see if you may have something even better.....

Not big on dots. Prefer a sight line. It ms naked right now and that is OK, but I last the confidence on aim without any kind of alignment aid. I think I'm going to keep it and just run a sharpie on the top line until winter. Then send it to scotty.

I'd do the bettinardi - their tour putters are great looking. Plus they're less mainstream than a Scotty. I've never played a round of golf that I didn't see someone on the course w/ a SC putter. You really don't see that many Betti's - especially not tour ones.

If you like the Buttonback, why not just wait a few months until the end of the season before sending it in? In the meantime, get a pinstripe sticker from an auto shop and make sure that is really what you want.

I put a slim piece of white athletic tape on the topline of my naked MA/66, but I'm going to send it in to LaMont over the winter.

I own a Newport BB and there isn't anything out there that feels exactly like a BB IMO, so you need to take that into consideration - especially if you like the feel. When I lived full time in Chicago I went to Bettinardi a few times - including a fitting. Great experience. If I were you, I would go to Studio B and roll the putter you're looking at buying (as well as some others) and see what you think. You may like the feel or you may not. Don't know until you try. :)

Oh......and there's nothing that says you can't own more than 1 gamer. ;)

This for sure

Pinstripe is a great way to go until the season is over

Doesnt the Custom Shop have a minimum you have to spend, like $180 or something? When i had a BB, i sent it to LaMont Mann. For way less money and time i had the finish redone in black polymer, paint fill changed, deep mill on the face and weight added. Still prefer any Betti to a Scotty though

They do have a minimum, but it's nowhere near 180.00. If I remember right, it's 45.00. So if the OP wanted to add a topline (which is a 30.00 charge normally) and do nothing else, then he would be charged 45.00 instead. Best thing to do in situations like that is to get your topline, then order a popular grip and headcover and turn around and sell them when they come in. The money you make off them would most likely pay for the cost of the topline. Plus, if you order a premium grip and headcover, they will repaint the putter at no additional charge.

As BYK said above, or the next 2 months, just dummy up the sightline with a small piece of pinstripe tape, or even paint. Easy to remove later. Then get the proper job done over the winter.
