Golfer's Elbow/Tennis Elbow Cures?

pierso2

Recommended Posts

So I woke up yesterday and I had some pain in my right elbow (I'm a left handed golfer). I thought nothing of it and figured I slept odd. Now it's a full day later and it's still there. I think it's golfer's elbow or just sore muscles or some strain. I spoke to my fiend who is a physical therapist and she said to ice and stretch it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one so I'm trying to see if anyone else has any suggestions on how to cure or lessen the pain. I'm considering Deep Blue from DoTerra which is like bengay or icy hot. Also thinking about trying a compression sleeve when I play and ice it when I can.

Any other ideas or suggestions? By the way, the pain is in my elbow where if you put your hand palm up, it would be in the elbow on the pinky finger side.

My "golfer's elbow" pain primarily has come about when I end up hitting off bad mats set on concrete at a driving range. I play with a compression sleeve and it helps a lot. Basically a pretty simple brace, like this one. Also, I do stretches, like this (3 slides - #2 & #3 are best for me).

I had is so bad I literally could not pick up a glass of water. Was not able to play golf for almost three months and had to go to physical therapy. When it first started I tried the various exercises, insert, softer grips, etc. The only thing that worked was switching to graphite shafts. Fortunately there are a lot of good options out there today.

Were you practicing a lot off of mats when it got that bad?

I just built a set with Steelfibers and may make them my "winter clubs" when we go to mats.

I've been dealing with tendonitis for over a year and here is what I've found helps the most:

- use a Bandit brace when you play or hit balls. They cost a little more but are the best forearm brace I've found.

- Get some CT Cream and a Massage Star. Apply the CT Cream to your forearm and work the muscles in your arm with widest side of the massage star (not the sore point on the elbow, though). My therapist told me that the muscles are essentially knotted up and you have to work them straight and lose again.

- After most of the pain is gone do some strengthening exercises using a light 2 or 5 pound weight. Lay your forearm on a flat surface, holding the weight palm down. Use your other hand to lift the hand holding the weight but lower it under its own power. Then stretch after by folding your hand down with your other hand and rotating the crook of your elbow up. You should feel the muscles in your forearm stretching. Do 3 sets of 15 lifts and stretch for 30 seconds in between. After that, hold the weight palm down again with your forearm wresting on a flat surface and rotate the weight left and right 15 times (each rotation left/right counts as one). Then stretch again. I started with 2.5 pounds and it does not feel like much but you will be sore later. Work up to heavier weight. Do this about 3 times a week.

FYI - I am not a therapist but I have been seeing one and this is what he's having me do. I have definitely seen improvement. Good luck!

++ on the Band-it brace

https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Band-Braces-Therapeutic-Forearm/dp/B00CSDEDR8

(Walmart might carry it, or your local pharmacy)

I found these exercises helped me a couple of years ago

It went away within a couple of months and knock on wood, hasn't come back.

I also found the twisting a rolled up kitchen towel exercise seemed to help (or at least didn't make it worse)

I went through some bad pain earlier this year due to excessive practice (even with graphite shafts). So I looked up some physical therapy suggestions which helped some, but what started really helping was getting a brace (just like the neoprene/Velcro strap to go around your forearm) and using it when playing golf/hitting balls, icing my elbow after practice, I also put the heating pad on it when just sitting around the house (usually surfing GolfWRX) and after getting it warmed up for 15-20 minutes do the stretches and such since it is nice and warmed up. Feels amazingly better now. The heat will increase the blood flow and help the actual healing along with the therapy.

I get steroid shots twice a month, I take a pill once a day for arthritis. And I wear the band below my elbow when I play. But, still have pain and loud pops. The shots and medication help out a lot when I do t play golf. But, once I take my first swing. It's all pain for the entire round.

I couldn't agree more with Blakester.... Heat/ice, pills, braces.... I did it all for a year. Finally I started deep tissue massage on the area above and below the elbow along with stretching and strengthening exercises. It wasn't until I did the deep tissue rubbing did my condition go away. Hurt like heck doing it, but after two weeks of daily massaging the area, pain is totally gone...

Good luck

Good things:

rest, pt, heat/ice, support bands, graphite shafts. Bad things:

over use, most practice range mats, steel shafts, over swinging.

I got golfer's elbow for the first time about two weeks ago. Went to the Dr. and was prescribed twice daily naproxen and a consult to the physical therapist. The PT started me on a set of 10 Iontophoresis treatments along with rest, ice, tennis elbow strap and told me to massage the area. I think it is getting better slowly and I've been good about getting the Iontophoresis treatments 3 times a week, currently done 4 of 10, and I've iced 1-2 times a day. I played 18 today and felt it, but I think wasn't terrible. I'm playing once more on Tuesday and then taking 10 days off as I'll be traveling for work. I'm optimistic it will be mostly healed after 10 days off. I also ordered the flex bar from Amazon and it will arrive tomorrow and I'll try the exercises for a couple weeks.

Did you do the deep tissue massage with your thumb / hand or some kind of massage device? I tried my thumb, but it's hard to do it for 5 full minutes.

If you're dr is giving you two cortisone shots a month for tennis elbow I implore you to go find a new dr asap.

4 doctor visits and all said the same thing. My elbow pops so bad it sounds like a twig snapping in half. I've done x rays, and blood work. And I'm still on medication and shots.

Rest is best,I played on with my elbow problem and it took 18 months to heal. If has just started then do not play golf, even pick a club up for two weeks and you should be ok. If it persists then more rest is needed. Massage the area around you elbow, very gently, ice, and heat work well.

If you use a mouse all day then you need to change it to a vertical mouse - Anker make a great one. I'm convinced this helped more than anything.

I have a few videos that have some interesting stuff about massage, theraband etc
