I'm a Titleist Ho but I have to admit I went with the G5 & love it. I looked at Titleist's website & saw that a lot of the tour players went back to the 983K and that pushed me towards the G5. If I were you I would wait till the new Titleist 460cc drivers come out in the spring and do your comparison then. The 905T is on the way out.

Just got my G5 last wednesday, not much longer than my 983K

G5 came in with 45" shaft (-3/4") Aldila NV 65

Need to try it out on the course went with the G5 instead of the new Titleist 905 since I wanted to step up to the 460cc club size.

I'll will most likely go with the Titleist driver that come in the 460cc range when it comes out! :)

I just reshafted my 905T with a Fuji ZCOM TW74, 44 3/4", D1. After taking it to the range, my initial impressions are that this is by far the best club/shaft combo, I have ever hit. Length, feel and dispersion are absolutely superb. I have tried the G5, and did not like it at all. That being saud, I bought my sister one (she is a scratch golfer), and she is hitting it 20 yards past her previous driver (R510 Tour TM).

I'd also wait until the 455cc 905r comes out in spring. It will feature slightly higher spin than the 905t, and will be a little more forgiving. As of now, I stuck with my 983k though. I will switch to the 905R though.

It's relative to how you play. If you hit in the 70's-80's range get the Titleist, 80's-90's the G5 is the way to get go, the shaft is very important, too. I perfer the G5 with an Aldila NV 65 stiff shaft, this thing is a great driver. I'm personally getting tired of hearing everybody knock it. I hit an average 265 (TM 540XD), that said, I hit all, but 3 fairways yesterday and was hitting around 280 and even topped the 300 yard mark twice. People say it has some differential in lofts as opposed to others. I don't care, it makes me play better. It is what it is. I'll keep my occasional 300 yd drive, with a gradual fade. It makes me look good on the tee box. The best feeling was yesterday, when my friend had his r7 and I ran it passed him by 30 yards on many occasions. You should have seen his face, jaw dropping and utter disgust. It was great, I don't know if he was pissed about me outdriving him or if he was pissed that his club was $100 more than mine and the fact that I out drove him.

I love the G5, get one!!!

Just picked up a 905T with Proforce V2 shaft and this is an absolutely amazing combination! I sometimes have accuracy issues but this club just wants to go straight and gives the ball a high penetrating flight. Can't comment on the G5 but I used to own a G2 and the 905 is a notch above especially in accuracy. The V2 shaft seems to be made for this club. The club does have a muted sound and my FT-3 is actually much louder but I can live with that. :)

Callaway rep is friend of mine and sometimes has to be careful of what info leaks out. However, he did say that the FT-3 will be the last composite driver manufactured by Callaway. The management at Callaway is not happy with the retail sales of this club. I owned this club and actually hit it very well. I just traded my FT-3 for a G5 because I don't want to be stuck with a technology (carbon composite) that is on the way out. Callaway has the X-460 and other prototypes in the making, none of which will be composite materials.

Yes, this is very true i can speak on this particular callaway issue as the X-460 will be released very soon as well as a few other models with various weighting in around the same size category. Many schools of thought are concerned that carbon composite is a brittle technology and doesnt provide the structural integrity over time for the face bc it doesnt have metal supporting metal and therefore the higher swing speed players such as tour pros wont get the longevity out of their drivers. As well its harder to produce heads with various weights when using a material as light as carbon fiber. The X-460 looks very much the same and is somewhat traditional callaway shape. Id say stay away from composite or if you must go with clevelands imo. Id say go with the G5 or the R5 dual or wait for the new R7 460 which i didnt like but im a traditionalist (like new technology in smaller size hence my move to the original quad coming). The titleist drivers arent great but here is titleist problem.

Because of the bore through nature and the depth of the insertion of those shafts the shaft tends to have less torque and less play in it in the tip section. This is the section of the shaft that is key for the avg. golfer bc the tendency is to not get the ball up especially with these new lower spinning drivers. Titleists bore through technology makes it even harder by in essence forcing the flex point of the shaft up. I know your saying wait you cant really move the flex point they designed it to be where it is...and yes to some extent thats true, but there is a range and the titleist bore depth take the flex point range on the shaft and makes it shorter and higher up. This will in turn force the ball flight down which for high ball and high spin players or steep angle swinger like myself is ok. Being fitted on a launch monitor numerous times i know that because of my angle of attack i have about an 11* to 13* launch with a 9.5* driver however i put about 300 to 350 rpms less spin than is reccomended by both TM and PING. bc of my angle of attack however i hit a VERY high ball at peak height. However for someone who needs to get the ball up they must compensate by swinging differently or going to a different shaft or going to a higher loft. Titleists also create another problem for the avg golfer. Bc of the tip insertion depth and the bore through etc the effective torque is greatly reduced. Bc of this fact the avg. golfer who has a less than desirable shot dispersion is fighting the odds. While less torque is great for higher swing speeds and stronger better players its detrimental to the avg. Player. The greater toque would allow the face to square up better. So the less than desirable shot dispersion has just been made worse. For these reasons I'd say 1) go with Ping (and not jus bc i play almost all ping bc frankly i dont like the driver it goes against what i want in a club) and 2) the avg. golfer should play titleist drivers bc it is in effect aiding all their bad tendencies and making their shot dispersion worse.

Sorry for the long post just found a good place to unload this knowledge and opinion and thought id help. Good Luck to all and as i say Go big or Go home.

Tee it high and let it fly,

Adam

I own one of each of the drivers you are stuck between and will say that the Ping with a Prolaunch shaft seems to be straighter on mis-hits, but that I still can do more with the 905T with an NV75 shaft. I have tested them together Thoroughly and know that the 905T is longer for me particularly on centered hits, even at an inch shorter shaft length.

I can't believe the poo that everyone is slinging about the 905T. I am guessing that the way things work, everyone will be out looking for them in 20 months after they have all ran out and spent the bucks on a Jumbo Titleist 905R, only to find out that it is oh-my-gaad a 460 driver....

I have to say that I am no expert, however this is my first year golfing and I chose the G2 adila NV S shaft 10 loft. I have hit this driver straight and well over 300 yards on numerous occasions with a max drive of 350 right down the middle. Dont get me wrong I´ve had my bad ones too but overall a very forgiving driver. The look is great, the sound at impact is orgasmic. It is just such a sweet feeling driver I would definately recomend this club. There have been so many tiomes also where I have hit this club and if it did not go where I wanted, I knew right away what I had done and was able to correct the very next swing all from the feel. Thats impressive to me from a beginners standpoint. If you want to save a few bucks have a look at the G2. Ive heard a few people say that the G5 is not that big a leap in upgrade form the G2. Hope that helps.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm still using the TM540XD 10.5* which comes with a stock "speeder" TM-55 shaft. Though it says it's a firm shaft, I reckon it plays softer.

I am looking to buy more distance off the tee to my average 230yds. Have the G5 in the my sights, but will also check out the new R7 425 and Nkie SQ. I wondered about the 905T but reckon it may not be right for me. I'off 8.5. But for one bad day, last few rounds have been very good -- 75-77-90-73.

Appreciate yr comments. :birthday:
