March trip to St. George or Mesquite - a few questions...

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am organizing a buddies trip for Mar 9-12 and am considering St. George/Mesquite. Would love a little feedback on the following:

1. Our usual plan of attack is to play 36 on the full days of our stay. This typically puts us at something like 7:45am and 1:30pm tee times. I wondered if any might be able to weigh in on likelihood of encountering frost warnings there that time of year. Such occurrences would probably shut the door on 36.

2. We have some thrifty members of our group. Generally, would Mesquite or St. George be pricier, all else equal?

3. Was leaning toward St. George, as they have lots of VRBO options. Anyone with VRBO experience there?

4. What one thing would make you prefer one of those two locales over the other?

Many thanks.

In general,

There is a possibility that you could get frost delay's in either location. St. George would have a better chance of delay simply because it is 45 minutes north. Mesquite tends be 5 degrees warmer that time of the year. Although not likely, it could easily drop some snow in St. George in early March. With that said, you are more than likely to have playable weather, but this area IS NOT Arizona or Florida during this time a year. If you get a cold front and the wind blows in Mesquite, you are going to have your hands full.

In terms of Mesquite, you will have to move your 36 hole times up. You will have to be off the course in Mesquite, probably by 5:30 pm, if not sooner. You are going to have less than 12 hours of daylight in either location. If your desire is to play Wolf Creek, than you are not likely to get 36 in there or if you combine it with another course. When it gets dark, it feels like it goes from sunlight to pitch black almost instantaneously.

If you want to really cheap out, the casino hotels are pretty dirt cheap. You can really slum it at the Virgin River. Can't help you on the VRBO's, but I have been a part of or have used VRBO a few times in other locations and all experiences were excellent.

The big advantage of Mesquite is that everything is within 10 minutes driving distance in terms of navigating from course to course. The Oasis has 36 holes right there. Conestoga and Falcon Ridge are, for the most part, right next to each other. If your crew likes to gamble, than that is a huge plus. If not, there is literally zero to do in Mesquite. But, Vegas is down the road about an hour or so.

One other heads up is that St. George is a big spring break destination, but I am not sure when the colleges have their spring breaks in 2017.

In St. George you will have to drive. Sand Hollow, Coral Canyon, and Sky Mountain a bit of a drive from St. George, but not far. If you do 36, you are going to have to do it at the same course for best results, although those 3 are pretty close together. Sunbrook has 27 holes which would be a good option.

If you stay in either place and play in the other you will drive 45 minutes in the dark both ways through, what can be, a pretty treacherous canyon.

Hi Wisc,

Did you end up heading to Mesquite or St George? We are looking to do a buddies golf trip, leaving from MSP, and assessing locations now. Would love any feedback or suggestions! Thank you!

My friends and I did a trip in 2017. Would be happy to share details in PM. Basically we played mesquite courses on the way in and out from Vegas and stayed in st George the other days.

Hopefully if St George ended up being the choice that you got out to Sand Hollow. The champ course is solid with a stretch of breath taking, has a really cool 9 hole 'links' and one of the coolest chipping courses that you can find. Probably my favorite golf course amenity. A total blast to finish a bet or to start a round while waiting to peg it.

Not to mention, Sky Mountain with killer views, and 27 pretty complete holes at Sun Brook, and a favorite Junior golf tournament stop at the 9 holer Dixie Red Hills.

A must stop is Tom's Deli right off of Bluff Street.
