6 GolfWRX Members are getting the opportinutiey to go Behind the Scenes to see how the award winning Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Ball is made. We're live from the plant in Chicopee, Massachusetts for a tour with the good folks at Callaway on Tuesday, October 4.

Great way to start things off!

This used to be a Spaulding ball plant, we're in the "Molitor" meeting room right now.

The building we're in was built in 1915 for car manufacturing but that never happened.

Spaulding eventually bought it and under Spaulding and now Callaway, this building has manufactured golf balls for 75 years.

The first dimpled golf balls were developed here. Dimples were first machined into EACH ball,

I've never machined any dimples into any golf balls, but managed to machine a few smiles and slices back in the balata days.

I have yet to hit a chrome soft...but want to for sure. My local Dick's is still trying to sell sr3 for 30 a dozen...for some reason.

Inside there's a small reception desk with some cool displays, including Chrome Soft Tour, a ball developed specifically for Ryo Ishikawa, plus the Legacy Black model available in Japan.

Of course there's Mr. 58's Chrome Soft special edition.

Speaking of Jimbo, his WITB is looking sparse.

There's a soccer ball with just a few famous signatures on it, too.

Due to intellectual property concerns we can't share a lot of what's inside, but the operation is extensive. There at least 7 different production areas, each with about 3 steps in each, so there is a lot that goes into golf ball manufacturing. Each machine is very specific, so the cost of entry into the ball manufacturing business is high.

We are proud to say we did nothing to break this streak.

Chrome soft has a dual core (essentially an inner core wrapped with an outer core). Here, a few of the inner core "ingredients" are mixed together with a tremendous amount of pressure, creating "pelts" of compound. It's hard but pliable.

This will go into a press to become a round core of your Callaway golf ball.

Through the rest of tour we saw the balls being made from start to finish (there is a cool writeup from Chad Coleman at Callaway on how the Chrome Soft is made here).

We grabbed some dual-cores without cover for a driving contest out on the range today.

For the last part of the tour, we had to gown up for the finishing area. Have to keep those imperfections out of the paint and finishing layers.

Last we were surprised with some Custom GolfWRX logo Chrome Soft Truvis. Bravo!
