How 'bout the Tommy Armour Silver Scot 845s?

Recommended Posts

Saw the post about the Ping Eye 2s, and wondered whether anyone was still playing the 845s. I don't actually play those clubs; I just like the Tour Step shafts, so I'm putting them in my set of (forged) KZG Evolutions. Someone at Golf Galaxy looked at what I wanted to do, and wanted to sell me some 'new technology.' I just smiled and said that the technology I wanted was in the forging! But those Tour Steps from a set of Silver Scots really gets 'em out there high and far for me!

Played TA 845's back in the day. My one and only new set of irons. Choosing them over Eye 2's. Broke a shaft on one of the clubs and it was replaced with TT Lite XL. I couldn't tell the difference between the two other than the shaft label. As I remember it from 20+ years ago.

Keep in mind, Tour Steps out of TA's are .355. The internets sez the Evolutions are .370. So shimming will be required.

The T.A's are long gone. Recently acquired Eye 2's because I missed them the first go around. I constant cycle of old and new.

A good friend still plays the TA 845 Tours. I never have bothered to ask how long he has had them. They are still in really good nick.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Back in 1989, I was still playing my Wilsons from 1975. My game was really improving due to circumstances allowing me to play much more golf than earlier. I wanted a set of TA 845's, but the public course owner coaxed me into ordering a set of steel shaft Pal Joey clubs, which he said were just as good for hundreds of dollars less. For $318, including tax, I bought a set of 8 irons (slightly oversize) and 3 small headed metal woods. In my opinion, the Pal Joey irons were excellent quality. The woods, I barely used at all. I was still playing wooden woods at the time, and graduated in the next few years playing clones of the oversize Callaway Berthas.

In 1997, I (still wanting TA's), I traded the Pal Joeys, (beautiful condition, supposedly getting $100 for the 11 clubs. I bought a set of TA Ti-100's, titanium heads, and graphite stiff shafts and an upright lie. With $100 rebate, and the $100 trade, I still paid around $1,000 balance. I recall the box label stated the box contained precious metal, Ha, Ha. Those irons were huge. Two other guys I knew had identical sets. One guy actually had them stolen, supposedly out of the trunk of his car.

I played those clubs until around 2005 and after, pretty good clubs. I had no complaints. Around Y2K, I started to go vintage. Playing ancient blades made those Ti shovels look huge and cumbersome. I also started playing Karsten 2's from 1975, which look and play a lot like the Pal Joeys. In 2010, I traded the Ti's ($110) in great condition, got a Diablo driver for an additional $42.

Currently, my "modern" play consists of the Karstens, and Callaway 09 X-forged.

If I had gotten the 845's I wanted in the first place, I bet I'd still be playing them.

Pal Joey was owned by the same folks that owned the Dynacraft component company. There were many models of Pal Joey and Dynacraft clubs that were identical except that Pal Joey was the "OEM" version and Dynacraft was the component version. I built a lot of clubs from Dynacraft heads and always found them to be of excellent quality.

Hireko now owns Dynacraft, and they are still using the Pal Joey name on their junior clubs.

Those were great clubs, loved by many. I played a couple of rounds with them but wen it was time for clubs I went with the Wilson Staff Ultra 45, another classic. You would probably have liked the shafts in the Ultra 45's as well, they were Firestick 2.8, made for Wilson by TT.

Going back to my junior days late 1990s, then college, you'd have seen a lot of the Armours. Pings too, but I think there was a less offset Armour model wasn't there? I used some DCIs for a bit around then and they were the less offset black triangle version.

They were competing against Mizuno for the blade crowd, but pretty popular of the cast cavity backs.

I'm surprised you haven't run across a set of these in a thrift store. I've purchased, cleaned, restored and resold six sets of 845s, all found in thrifts.

The best deal I got was a 1-PW, W3, SW and W4 for 29 cents each!

My 845's are my Florida set. I love them and they never let me down. I just have to remember to take one extra club for whatever yardage I've got, compared to my Mizzies.

I did change out the stepped shafts for DGR300's. Made them even better.

Last winter, I hit a soft 30yd approach shot with my SW and the shaft broke (from rust) at the bottom of the grip. The ball went 80 yds over the green and the head/shaft went 60 yds over my friends' heads - OOPS! I was standing in the fairway with the grip still in my hands.

There were two versions of the 855s, one with less offset than the other, but only one version of the 845s. Someone told me many years ago that there was a reduced offset version of the 845s that was made for their tour staff, but that may be nothing more than urban legend.

I have a set of those DCI Blacks and they were in the bag just yesterday. The original DCIs and the 845s share the same designer, John Hoeflich. He later designed the 300 series irons for TaylorMade, which have a lot of similarities to his earlier designs. From a playability standpoint, they did everything the Eye2 did in what most would consider a nicer looking package.

There was a reduced offset version, but it was of the 845 Oversize, not the original. Right before Teardrop bough Tommy Armour, they put out a bunch of variations in the 845 line....845 Oversize, 845 Titanium Face, 845 Oversize Reduced Offset.

There are also those who argue that the original 845 was slightly tweaked when the company was purchased and the earlier no ferrule version had a different amount of offset than the later ones. Never been proven, but that was a big golf forum fight circa 1999/2000.

Yes I remember those. They came after the 855s and the TI100 debacle from which the company never really recovered

Your comment about the differences between the original and later versions of the 845s sent me to my Armour catalog folder, and while the catalog I have with the ferrule version has the offset specs, none of my catalogs with the original version have the offset specs. Loft, lie, length yes, but nothing about offset.

NRJyzr-

The 845s came in 3 versions- 2 Upright, Standard, and 2 Flat. Hosels indicated the Lie angle.

Yes, I'd spent some time looking for the upright sets, they don't seem to be too numerous. And not everyone selling a set on fleabay knows what they have (or mentions it, if they know), so you have to try combing the pics for that telltale white stripe. ;)

All of the 845s sets I've sold have been standard lie. Have yet to run across anything else.

Nor have I found a set of the v groove version. I bought a set of those new in 1991, when they were at the height of their popularity. They must have really been scrambling to deliver product, because when I took those home to inspect them there was dried epoxy everywhere on the heads and shafts. I returned them unused and exchanged them for a set of the original Titleist DCI Golds, which also have v grooves. That's the last set of new irons I bought, and I still have them. Everything since has been from the used bin, or in recent years, from a thrift store.

I can't remember for certain, but I believe that the v groove version of the 845s had a "v" on the toe where the loft number was on the u groove model. My catalogs show both models being available but have no pictures of the v groove version.

i like the look and playability of the lynx parallax irons. i need to specify i mean the first early version of the parallax. there is a huge difference. the later model is just like most other cavity backs but the early model is very unique.
