course condition just before overseeding and after

looking for some help. Booking a trip for Palm Springs in Fall 2017. I see that a lot of courses oversees during this time. We want to play nice green courses in best condition. Should we play shortly before course overseeds - or wait a week or so after the course reopens? Any info would be great!1

Neither. The course before overseeding is usually scalped. Very dry and very little to no grass. Afterwards the course is very wet(no carts allowed) and the grass looks great, but hasn't fully grown in. The longer the course has been open after overseed is the best. Try to find something that has been open for a few weeks. Also look at how long the course is closed during overseeding. Some courses try to rush and reopen after two weeks and the grass just isn't great after that short of time. You can always look for a course with 27 or 36 holes because they usually overseed them separately and you have a better chance of the grass being good on one.

i would go 3-4 weeks before the overseer or wait at least 4 weeks after. also, call down and talk to the asst pro's at the course you are going to play. they will telll u about local conditions and help you make your decision.

Give the courses a call, and maybe call to the superintendent.....he/she will know much more than most of the pros in the pro shop

Desert courses overseed differently than Southeast courses. This was something I found out when I lived in FL for a couple of years and my club was closed 2 days for overseed. My club in AZ is closed four weeks for comparison. 2 days vs 4 weeks is a big deal because we regrow the entire course other than our bent greens (elevation is above 2700' allowing bent instead of Bermuda). A lot of public courses close for two weeks and the grass is extremely thin when they reopen with CPO conditions. It sucks. We usually have a month of CPO but I walk so that is irrelevant. I would wait at least four weeks and preferably 6 before playing a public desert course post overseed.
