Birdie Ball or Big Moss putting green?

gdb99

Recommended Posts

I will be buying an indoor putting green. This will be going in the living room, and I'm thinking 3'-4' wide by 12' or 14' long (yes, I'm single).

I need to work on chipping as well as putting.

I have been pricing both of these mats today, but there is no mention in the reviews I have seen about chipping with the Birdie Ball. Read that chipping with the Big Moss is very realistic.

Which do you have, prefer, or also looking to buy?

Thanks.

I think there are pros and cons to each. The birdie ball is not as expensive as the big moss and has great roll to it. I am by no means trying to sell you one or the other because I haven't putted on the big moss, but I do own a birdieball putting green 4 by 14 feet. I have mine downstairs on the concrete floor and it works beautifully. I don't know if I would recommend putting the birdie ball over carpeting which I assume you have in the living room and would think that a big boss would lie better on carpet because it is a physically heavier green. The only thing I dislike about the big boss is that it's a slight incline uphill when you putt, yes ever so slightly but it is there. Then it flattens out at the hole. If it didn't do this I would own one, and have even contemplated buying one anyway for upstairs in my living room. For winter putting practice distance is not as important as technique in keeping a 3-10 foot putt online. If you can strike a 10 ft putt consistantly on line with a pure stroke then you have accomplished what I feel an indoor putting green should provide. Being consistent and pure with your putting stroke is a key element in doing the same on the golf course. Indoor putting greens are not long enough generally to aid in lag putting. In my opinion, if you are going to put you're putting green on carpet I would probably suggest the big moss. Although, if you are putting it on a harder surface I would suggest looking at the birdie ball. Whichever one you get I think you will enjoy and your puting skills will be better off for it.

One other point to answer your question in regards to chipping is that I bought some simulated grass from another company that I chip from to my birdie ball green and it works just fine. I even get a little spin when the ball hits the green to slow the ball down. It actually checks up a bit.

I have a Big Moss and I like it a lot. Very well made. However, I do have it on a fairly plush/thick wool carpet in my basement man room and it's always moving and shifting around, when I stand on it, which is annoying. I'm sure it would be much better on hardwood, concrete, or tiled floors.

Have a big moss and it definitely is much better on hard wood / tile. Agree with toga town above that it shifts when used on carpet.

I grabbed a 5x15 Big Moss on craigslist for $90 a few weeks back but didn't have the space for it, so I sold it to a buddy. It has me wanting something that does fit my space and considering a Birdie Ball. Any direct comparison from anyone who has used/owned both?

I do like that BB has solid cups, but can you stand on the lower end models?

A lot of my friends, including myself, have been using the material that Kevin Na, Ben Crane, Webb Simpson use in their home putting greens. Rolls very true since their is no grain, rolls at 10-11 speed which is the best part about it. Also looks very very good! Performs the BEST, and much more affordable than synthetic turf and BirdieBall. I found it on EBay by searching PGA Tour Indoor Putting greens.

It has definitely helped my putting so much. You'll thank me later :P

I just received my big moss putting green yesterday, it's 3 by 9 feet. My first impression wasn't very high because I was expecting a rubber-based turf. The big moss putting green is actually sort of a hard fabric backing to the green itself Kama so it isn't very heavy like I hoped it would be so it would lay better on the carpeting. None the less it sits down pretty good on my living room carpet between my recliner chair and a television which I can get away with because I am a bachelor. The putting surface is excellent and rolls true at about an 11 on the stimpmeter. I got mine only 9 feet long because of limited space upstairs, and also because I don't think one can practice leg cutting too well indoors. The main reason for an indoor putting green is to hone your stroke down for accuracy from about 8 feet and in my opinion. Initially I was a bit unhappy with the big moss putting green because of how the base was constructed but as time goes on I'm liking it more and more. As far as the chipping mat I don't like that part because it seems rather cheap. I have some turf downstairs from another project I can use as a chipping mat which is much much nicer.

Can you post a zoomed in picture of the turf and if you would be so kind an underneath photo as well. Is it sturdy enough to wedge one side to create a break?

I am a very satisfied big moss owner but you can never have too much golf stuff.

That looks just like the picture on ebay. Are the one selling them?

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.

I had a 2x12 birdie ball, but picked up a big moss 6x12 today off Craigslist which is going to cost me $80 since I sold the birdie ball to a friend. Rolls true and feels nice. I have it on carpet right now and will try it in hardwood since everyone says it sits better that way. I dig the hole reducers as well.

I picked this one up off of Craigslist last night for $135 and couldn't be happier. It's the 6x12 one "The General" and its in perfect condition with hole reducers and brake snakes included. I had a 2x12 Birdieball that was good, but I wanted something a little bigger. I'm selling the birdieball to a buddy for $50 so overall the upgrade is only going to cost me about $85!

  • 3 weeks later...

I have had the 4x14 Birdie Ball for 3 years. It is good for putting as well as chipping onto and each side has a different feel and speed. I mostly use almost golf balls for chipping inside but a regular golf ball works as well. There are many ways to customize the Birdie Ball greens for your needs. They have plenty of accessories, too.

I ended up with a 4' X 14' Birdie Ball. It's different than I thought it would be.

It's made of foam. So when you're walking around on it, you hear pops every once in awhile. People on here say they last, so I'm not too worried.

I bought the 9-10 stimp green, because I play a muni. Definitely a difference from putting one way or the other.

About feeling like you are the edge while putting, I have mine against a wall. So when my back is behind me while putting, I can only half the mat. If it was 3', I would feel cramped, so it depends on how you place it in your room. I'm thinking about moving mine off the wall.

Don't forget to put "upgrade" in the comment section when ordering. You get a free 2' in length!

for those who have big moss how does the incline help or hurt practice. looking to practice short 8' putts that are straight in but not sure i want to practice uphill putts constantly. will this throw off sense of distance and speed come spring?
