Reviews, thought, & comments on having clubs built at PGA Tour Superstore, Golf Mart, Golfsmith etc.

Hi,

I have a set of iron heads and a set of shafts that I would like to be built. There are some very highend folks in my area that build clubs (SF Bay Area), but the prices are 3x the local retail stores. I can't justify spending $60+ per iron when the PGA Tour superstore and Golf Mart are $20 per club. Any thoughts? I am a decent DIY'er, but don't want to mess up my clubs breaking my cherry as this would be my first build (and I don't plan to build many sets in the future).

Go to Shawn at Alameda Golf Works in... funnily enough Alameda.

Nice chap and most recently put together my Z745s with Speeder Pro shafts. I'd pop in now and again for a bit of work depending on timing. Otherwise I had good luck with the guys at GolfSmith in Pleasant Hill. They did the initial reshaft of those z745s when I had steel shafts in them, and I also have some Fly Z Pros they did, that I really like.

That said, if that is one of the GS stores closing, maybe that time has passed.

I've messed around building clubs for my own use, not paying attention to getting swingweights right. I don't even know what SW works best for me (anything between D0-D5 is ok for me). Honestly it's not that hard but if you're not going to tinker beyond this set, I would recommend Eric at the Golfsmith in San Jose (not closing but turning into Golf Galaxy).

I used to hit balls out there, when I worked in San Mateo and was waiting out traffic, but I never went into Cool Clubs. Maybe it was just the tinted windows, but it always looked pretty dark and unvisited when I was there.

Any of the cool Clubs locations are spot on ! I would also recommend Joe Kwok if you are in the Bay Area . With craftsmanship you do get what you pay for !

Yeah, I did speak with him briefly. I think I will go that route in a year or so if I'm still playing frequently. $60-90 per club built is pretty steep and that doesn't include $160/hr for fitting. Cheaper than Cool Clubs, though.
