Lets Talk Balls!

Now that I have your attention.. haha..

I am looking for some advice on golf balls. I have not been playing for a while and when I stopped the Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x were my favorite balls. These balls are expensive though and being an average citizen I have a hard time justifying $50/dozen to my wife.

I am hoping that you guys can provide some feedback on new balls that perform similar to the Pro V1's but at a lower cost. I have heard talk about the "Top-Flite Gamer" but I find it hard to believe that there is a tour performance ball produced by Top-Flite.

Please give me some suggestions guys and girls on what ball would be right for me!

-I like spin, and soft feel around the greens.

I played to an Index of 2 a couple years ago.

Thanks! ;)

They are selling B330 balls on ggp for 20 bucks a dozen. You can deal hunt for TP Reds/Blacks right now (they can be found for around 20 a dozen also). I have heard great things about the gamer, so its worth a try.

I am seeing B330's for $40 on that website...and E6+ for $27/dozen...no deals to be had here, at least not right now.

Erh..if you're a 2 handicap, you should not be losing that many balls, shreadding them YES but not losing them. Anyway, for around $40 the 2008 TM red LDP balls are unbelievable. Played more than a few rounds with them and they are just sensation - long, don't do too many hooks or slices and stop on a dime - I am slowly loving them. Great feel on the putting as well.

Money ball for me, for sure. Other than that the E5 or E6 Bridgestones are a steal and so are the 2007 NOP or NOB that you can find...good luck with it....

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I have never really used a Bridgestone ball before but that might become my ball of choice by the sound of it.

Swingblues, I really don't lose many balls at all but I do tear them up fairly often. For this reason the Pro V1's are nice but if the balls that you guys mentioned can maintain their looks and playability as well as the Pro V1's than it will be worth a switch for sure.

I shot my career low with a Titleist Professional 90. I miss those balls ;)

+1 on the 2007 Nike One balls. I recently bought some for $29/dozen and I'd imagine you could find similar deals. A few months prior to that I bought a few dozen Callaway HX Tour 56 for $34/doz. and ended up liking them a lot. This month's Golf magazine had a huge article about golf balls which should tell you everything you need to know and more.

I prefer the Nike One Platinum little firmer ball good distance off the Driver and checks better on the greens for me than any Pro V this is the 06 version and can find deals on flea bay I bought 7 dozen in 06 for $130 shipped and the cover is very durable I'm sure the 07 and 08 would have to be better to maintain sales

I second that about the Taylormade TP balls from 2007. You can find them anywhere from $22-$29 as TM has introduced the 2008 versions of these products which are spectactular IMO.

I am also interested in the TaylorMade TP's. I have no experience with these balls, but it appears that the 2007 version had the reds as the "softer/more spin" ball and the blacks as the "harder/longer" ball. The 2008 version appears to have switched; the blacks are the "softer/more spin" and the reds are the "harder/longer" ball. Could someone confirm?

It appears that the original poster liked the ProV1 (versus the ProV1x). At the risk of saying something you already know, if you go the Bridgestone direction, then you will want to look at the B330S (as apposed to the B330). The B330S is the "softer" feeling of the two.

Dave39,

I, like you, hate dropping $45 a dozen on golf balls. I always look for quality golf balls that are less expensive. This year I have tried the following. Taylormade Burner, Taylormade Burner TP, Top Flight Gamer, Top Flight XL Tour, ProV1, ProV1X.

I actually like the Taylormade's better than all of the others. Maybe it's the lower compression, but they feel very soft when putting, but not mushy. I tend to be a high spin player so the Burner and Burner TP help eliminate to much spin on full wedge shots. The TP feels slightly softer and spins slightly more than the Burner. In my experience the ProV1 & ProV1X hurt me more than they help me on full wedge shots (spin). The Top Flight gamer was a nice ball, but got chewed up very easily by my grooves. Although it did perform well, I had to pick off little frays all round long. I actually do like the Top Flight XL Tour ball. It is a little bit firmer than the others, but an overall solid ball (good spin, feel, durability).

In my opinion the Taylormade balls are very long. I have found they hold up well during a round and perform as well as "premium" balls (minus the spin). I am switching between the Burner's and Burner TP's depending on how hard the greens are that I am playing. I think the Burner is a 2 piece ball for $19.99 and the Burner TP is a 3 piece for $24.99.

I don't know if this will help but, my Driver swing speed is around 108, with a ball speed of about 158 and a smash factor of 1.51 (Golf Galaxy).

Buy a sleeve of each and play them, you won't be disappointed.

I'd have to say that you should buy a few dozen used balls from a reputable source like knetgolf, or lostgolfballs. Their 2nd quality stuff is plenty playable for testing, and about 30% of what a new ball is. The 1st quality stuff looks like it just came out of the sleeve. You can also find some deals on auctions on ebay for used, but make sure they are not refinished. Refinished balls are horrible. I just picked up 9 dozen mint HX Tours for 1.11/ball on ebay. They should last me through the middle of the season depending on how many rounds I get in. I can report back the quality compared to lostgolfballs and knetgolf when they arrive.

I have been playing the Zip for a couple of weeks and is an all around enjoyable golf ball. It has decent spin around the greens still out to the jury though as it has been very wet in this area. I really like that it handles the wind very well with the shallow dimples. I seem to get quite a few yards more compared to other golf balls maybe 5 yards. I am planning on switching to the Gamer for the next couple of weeks and see how it compares and how it affects my scoring. I may also throw the E5+ a couple of weeks after that as well. These 3 seem to be the top of the buzz list from what I have seen in terms of playability and price. If you want a premium ball that holds in the wind as well the Wilson TX4 Pro is about $29.99 a dozen as well and ranked good in the Golf Magazine tests.
