Overspeed Training is working!

Hondabuff

Recommended Posts

Been doing the over speed training and seeing excellent results after 5 weeks. 14 more yards on average with the new 915 Driver in 48* weather dressed like I was going sled riding. I was only able to get about a dozen shots off before the wind and rain kept blowing over my launch monitor and swing radar. Bays were covered but it was still terrible. Driver was between 109-111 consistently on the SSR. Looks to be about a 5% gain and pretty promising for golfing in January. My longest hits with the old driver is now my average with the new 915. I would like to be at the 115mph mark by start of league play in April.

I ended up copying the Super Speed Golf system with my home made sticks. I posted in another link about them. Cheap True Temper Rocket X flex shafts from eBay for $17 a piece and a couple of brass calibration weights. Clubs weights are 220/320/410. 90% of the speed comes from the arms and wrists. The wrest comes from the legs and hips. Best analogy is to vision a stick under your lead foot and when you start your downswing you try and to snap the stick from the push off the ground. Works as a speed multiplier to crack the whip at the bottom of the swing. 105mph was my Peak before and I was swinging hard to get 260yards. After a few weeks you learn the difference between swinging hard vs swinging fast. I feel like the Green club trains your muscles to swing fast and the Red club builds your strength in your wrists and arms to allow the fast twitch muscles to fire properly. Its very rewarding to see your swing speed increase after each session. I said before that I almost sold my SSR when I started it because my speed with the blue club was 98-102mph and I thought that no way was it that low. Doing the Protocols is actually a lot of fun to do and very addicting to beat your high swing during each training session. Each workout is only about 15-20 minutes.

After todays session I feel like my core strength and arm strength are feeling balanced. I hit a new high with the 410 club and my left handed swings are looking smoother and Im getting a bigger woosh. I have been doing protocol 1 from the Super Speed training and in between each set Im swining my ghetto swing fan.

Something to note when your doing the overspeed training is to not finish with a heavier club. I ordered another Rocket shaft and will use it with no weight to recalibrate my fast twitch muscles at the end of the protocol training. I have been finishing with the 320 gram club which is equal to my driver "around 113-115mph" but when I swing the V2 shaft "86gram" I see the speeds react weirdly. They will go like this at the end, 118,114,117,145,148,150mph as the fast twitch take a few swings of the super light club to reactivate. I reminds me of the game I played as a kid with my buddies where you would curl your fingers and pull your buddies hand "think carrying a bucket handle" and pull for 60 seconds as hard as you could. Then you would release and try and open your hand and your muscles would contract and force a fist and you couldn't open your hand for like 30 seconds.

I would like to get some extra speed as well but so far I always feared that it would mess up my swing. Do you have also data about where the ball would be going? Or, have you played after having increased your speed?

I wonder about this as well.

If I train to make real aggressive swings as fast and as powerful as possible won't my on course swing get sloppy. I could see myself getting real fast at the top with an over aggressive transition

You have to manually enter Right, Left or Straight after each shot with the ES12 which isn't hard to do but its the last thing your thinking about during a session. I was hitting at the range to get my baselines and I honestly think it straightened out my ball flight with my driver. Swinging the shaft only club is impossible to get any clubhead speed with out holding your lag and late releasing. At the end of last season league play I was fighting a cast from all the summer baseball and it killed all my power in my golf swing. It went from swinging fast to swinging hard. Coaching requires you to hit a lot of baseballs one handed while doing groundball practice and my right side became super dominant. What I like now while doing the overspeed training in Protocol 1 is the right hand left hand swings. I was getting 140mph speeds out of the right side but only 110-115 on the left hand. My left side after a few weeks is now up over 150 swinging left handed. If you ever watched a Terbuchet catapult fire

this is the same movement your trying to do and sequencing is everything. There is only a tiny window where your fast twitch muscles need to fire and everything else is just about hitting the proper positions to maximize the whip at the bottom of the swing.. Some people must just be blessed with proper sequencing and others have to learn it. If you ever seen the Y to Y drill, I do this with just the V2 shaft and can hit 120mph on the swing speed radar with just the arms. If I add the left leg pushing hard against the ground like I'm trying to snap a twig under my left foot the speed jumps to 130mph. The swing thought is "snapping" a towel.

I think this method is the wrong way to get your power.

even though it feels powerful. I noticed if I swing my heavy Medicus this is what my speed looks like and is the "powerless effort" swing. Why do you need so much effort in the back swing? Baseball players hit from a stationary backswing with the bat in a preset location. He is swinging a 150gram club with that much force and peaking at 118mph. I bet that dude can chop a 4" tree in half with an axe with that motion. Tons of power but the wrong kind. This drill from Clay Ballard is where I started to see some power boosts.
All the speed is expended a the straight line release point.

Figured i would post of video of my swing with the Green and Blue club. Niw that I figured out the camera I can start working on some more fundamentals. I have an issue with a complete shoulder turn and flexibility. Now that we are past the holidays I can start working on my swing some more. My goal is to maintain balance even swinging at 130mph.

Next time I go to the range I will grab some videos. Last time at the range it seemed like anything above 110mph didnt really give me a faster ball speed. Seems to me that smash factor is the X factor.

as nice as faster swings sound I'd be worried about doing this, like people who have great practice swings then bad real swings, because the face is wide open in the practice swings.

I have some experience with this method and can tell you without hesitation that it doesn't mess up your swing at all. What happens is that your normal effort with your normal swing produces higher swing speed. I have said in other threads that it almost seems like magic because on the course nothing seems different except your distances.

Going off of what DLiver just said, you can see at the end of my video I said I was going to swing nice and easy. In my mind my 115mph is my full power swing but when I decided to swing slow my fast twitch muscles retain the muscle memory and still fired at 113mph. 5-6 weeks ago my full power swing was peaking at 105 and normal swing was 100-103mph.

Just got back from the range and took my son to hit his new Cobras. Got a video shot of 2 swings and I can clearly say I gained alot of yardage. Cant really tell from the camera angle but the balls were dead straight with a small draw. Easy stock swings are hitting 110mph without much effort. I had a couple 116mph swings pop up and had some 290 carry distances. Now seeing my self on video I have to work on keeping my back elbow in more and shorten my swing. I think Im going to pick up the Tour Striker ball to do my overspeed training. Irons were going longer then normal today. There is a inflatable snowman on the on green and lasered 156yards and I was consistently 10-15 yards over it with my 7 iron. I was almost able to hit him with my 9 iron.

If you search on eBay they are called Calibration Weights. I purchased a 100/200/300 gram weights. If you buy .350 tip shafts you need a 8.9mm or 9.1mm bit.

Go to review some of swings and could see that my back swing was getting off plane. I was getting it up over my shoulder plane then wasnt really dropping it back down enough in the slot. I really focused this morning in the mirror of getting my shoulders around my body and a visual of putting my hands in my right arm pit. I saw speeds on the green club jump and the blue club I just reached my new max of 122mph with the 315 grams. Feels like I unlocked another 12mph just from correcting my angels.

Just ordered the Tour Striker smart ball to start using in my overspeed training. I have to fight getting too long in my swing and the arms rising above shoulder plane then having to drop back down into the slot. Now that I have some flexibility again I figured I would incorporate the Smartball basically as a swing jig. I seem to focus more on my fundamentals while speed training since you have no focus on hitting the ball and just free swinging. Really gives me the opportunity to groove my swing with the help of video to spot flaws. I have been using just my IPhone for recording but find it will miss a few frames. Anyone recommend a cheap camera that can capture more high speed frames? Maybe a Gopro or something.
