On a serious note, do you think where guys used to be tentative and squeamish when they got to -10 to 12, depending on par, that they are now of a different psyche and just shooting for pins?

As Car said, seems like they go into each shot/situation thinking aggressively. No fear. When dozens of guys are doing it each week naturally it will pay off for some of them.

A lot of "young guns" didn't make the cut because it didn't work out for them so well.

I think the biggest factor is that the USGA lost control of the ball and let the size of the driver get away from them.

A little about where this young man grew up.

Abbotsford B.C. has produced some outstanding golfers - Ray Stewart, James Lepp (NCAA champion), Nick Taylor (PGA tour winner two years ago) and Hadwin. There are some amazing tracks out this way. I think the gentlemen I just listed, with the exception of Stewart who I am not sure about, played their junior golf at Ledgeview. This course has some of the smallest, most diabolical greens in existence and it's located on a hill that has it's own gravity. Truly a unique place.

I grew up across the river and played numerous events there and I could walk on when I played for the local University team.

One other factor I have to mention is the great Vancouver Golf Tour (VGT). They have really taken the ball and run with it, giving players an opportunity to play in high-level competitions on a weekly basis. It's something that just wasn't around when I grew up, but now young players there just shoot the lights out! You will see far more young Canucks from this region coming up.

The technology helps, but the 59s have more to do with playing in perfect conditions, and courses playing easy. Or in this case, playing a course that probably isn't a tour level course. La Quinta shouldn't be on the rotation, frankly. Just look at the scores there today compared to the PGA West courses. You had a -13, -9, -8 and multiple -7s today. Basically every good round was at LQ while the other courses didn't yield any rounds that low. No one is shooting 59 at the stadium course - not even from the ladies tees, lol.

I think the biggest factor is mental. Rather than being afraid of this veteran or that one they are just playing the course. We all know these guys can shoot these scores on occasion in a casual round. Why does a tourney round have to be different? It's still golf. The pressure is self imposed. Easier to say than to do but it is true.

Used to see him hanging around at some of the local courses, seems like a nice guy. He used to be quite the snap show if I remember, nice to see him calm down and play some good golf over the past year or two. Feels like yesterday he nearly won the RBC at Shaughnessy.

I grew up in the Lepp era and thought we had some pretty good players with a chance to "make it". But none outside of Chris Barlya did anything with their Professional careers. And sadly for him when he finally made the PGA Tour, he got injured.

Now I see so many young (younger than me anyways!) BC players doing great things on all tours. I'm with you in that the VGT has created a solid platform for players to get multi round experience with strong competition. When you a see a Nick Taylor go out and win in one of his first PGA Tour events, how can you not gain confidence if you've played against him at some point on the VGT?

It's great to see and I hope we continue to see more BC and Canadian players work their way up the ranks.

Golf is a sport, and gradually records tumble. The difference in golf is we seem to not want them to and have to have a reason - ball, technology, courses. We never hear the Olympic committee suggesting that people should be forced to run in cotton vests with number cards pinned on or that we need to add 5m onto each track event. Have you looked at the physique of these guys lately ? Watch a vid of Faldo, Norman, Seve, Strange, Couples and then compare them to the new breed of gym bunnies. All makes a difference. Athletes break records, records get lower, life moves on

Ps - I have just noted that my bag in the sig file has not changed for nearly a year. Sorry, will try harder before summer :)

The myth that sub-60 rounds are caused only by long driving making courses obsolete. Look at the average driving distances of the players that have done it since 2010:

Paul Goydos - 274 yards

Stuart Appleby - 289 yards

Jim Furyk - 275 yards

Justin Thomas - 309 yards

Adam Hadwin - 293 yards

Only Justin Thomas fills that criteria.

So, more intense competition, from an earlier age mixed with the latest and best in equipment and training, not to mention psychology and nutrition, on courses that were built when people played persimmon and balata is leading to these lower scores. I guess I can live with that.

In a way, golf organizations dropped the ball when they allowed clubs to grow to the size of melons. But, pros hit it on the middle, so that wouldn't seem to be a giant effect. Others say the ball needs to be dialed back, how are you going to police that? Why would you want to?

It was inevitable that pros would begin breaking 59, somewhat, regularly. I hope none of you out there are losing any sleep.

No

The first four minute mile was on 6 May 1954 at Oxford University's Iffley Road Track, by Roger Banniste. A second runner was two months later, during the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver, B.C. with Australia's John Landy and Bannister, again.

Al Geiberger scored his 59 in 1977.

How many has there been since? And how many have repeated it?

i think more guys shoot at more pins everyday honestly.... players like Phil and Tiger started this idea i think ... They regularly go at pins that arent "getable"....and they get them! and the younger player has grown up watching this and they go for them too... Heck im one of those guys... Shortgames are all sharp now , and include Lob wedges and super Lobs and they just dont fear the short side anymore... It takes a lake or a dropoff into OB to make most of them think middle of the green anymore...

I would agree. It's happening often enough in recent years that there's no reason for them to think it's necessarily a once in a lifetime opportunity.
