Anyone still playing Maxfli Revolution blacks?

Stonewalled

Recommended Posts

I have googled softest irons ever, many a time and these Maxfli's [cast] always seem to pop up more often than not.

Always wanted a set and tonight i finally pulled the trigger, found a 3-pw in almost mint shape for $100 bucks.

I have looked at Maxfli's on and off for a few years but was trying to find a set with minimal chatter. These must be soft as most sets iv'e seen looked like they were tumbled in an industrial dryer.

I bought these just for an experiment, i love cheap experiments. lol

Just wanted to hear from fellow Golfwrxer's who have had experience with these irons.

Thanks in advance.

That's a great deal for $100! Those irons are getting harder and harder to find. I have a set of the Black Dots and a set of the Red Dot Midsize. I both got those sets for a steal (I paid $40 CDN for a 3-PW set of the Red Dots!). They are very soft feeling irons and are very susceptible to bag chatter since they're cast in Nickel with a chrome layer. Since they are so soft, any clubmaker can bend them to your preferred lie and loft with no issues.

I don't know why the major OEMs (or even the smaller ones) don't make nickel based irons anymore. From my recollection, the last OEM that made nickel based irons where the well received 2002 Maxfli A10s.

Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300

2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

Durability could be one reason, these tend to ding up pretty quickly. One must also factor in the mythology of forging. ;)

A last thought before hitting the post button... I'd seen it said in another thread that working with nickel in a full casting, as opposed to a thin layer thru a dipping setup as done with many/most carbon steel clubheads, was actually something of a pain in the behind.

I will say mine show plenty of chatter, how ever the face's are still in great shape after a good decade of use, not a lick of browning

I'm not sure it ever would. Browning is due to the color of the oxidized carbon steel. I'm not sure if the nickel alloy used in the Maxfli irons is susceptible to oxidation, and if it does, no idea what color it might be. Look at oxidized copper, for example. :)

Being true to the thread topic...

I have a set of Maxfli Revolution blacks in the garage. I got them from a fellow online golf nerd a couple years ago. They're virtually new, I think either the 6 or 7 iron were hit a few times, but I don't think they've ever seen the course.

And, because they have DGR shafts, I've never tried hitting them myself. A reshaft project. I *did* pick up collared ferrules to use with them, and have parallel shafts lying around to install in them, but that's as far as I've gotten. With a healthy number of other irons to play, it's easy to procrastinate with such projects.

I grabbed a 1 iron clubhead off fleabay a while back, shafted it up with DG, used it for a while in the 17° slot in my bag. It showed a fair bit of promise, though I ultimately set it aside for a Golden Ram 1 iron, when the mood strikes me to carry an iron in that 17°/18° slot. Since I was playing blades, it also seemed a bit weird to be using a CB 1 iron. ;)

I have owned my set since 2000, and dusted them off and regripped them to use last season. Still as good as anything else out there. A fellow WRXer, Boogs2, also gave me a set that he had no use for, which I was hoping to reshaft with some heavy graphite, but never got around to it. On a related note, I picked up a set of the Aussie blades from the same year, which are not forged, but equally as soft as the Revolutions. Once I get around to regripping those, I'll probably put them in play next to the Revolutions as a combo set.

Back when they came out, the Aussie Blades that are the companions to the Revolution irons were the softest clubs I'd ever hit. Hitting a wound ball with them was like hitting a marshmallow with a pillow. It was actually too soft...

Haven't had a set of the blacks but I have some sets of the Maxfli A10 Tours's. One of my top 5 of all time. They were a close cousin but were a combo set. Same nickel chrome casting and very soft feeling irons.

Lol, multiple sets of the Tours impressive. The A10 tours look lovely and they receive high praise from people in the know.

Is there much difference in feel between the 8,9 pw and the cb rest of the set?

They must have made numerous sets of these as you are not the first fellow to say he has a set of these put away for the future. Wow a 1 iron thought only god could hit a 1 iron, but i guess most don't have a maxfli rev or golden ram 1 iron. lol

Good to hear that these are as good as anything out there, [not the first time i have heard that about these] That combo set sounds like a winner.

I've never had much problem hitting long irons, so I've never understood the reaction of some folks when I hit a 17° or 18° iron (no matter if it's 1, 2, or even 3 on the sole). It's not like I'm a scratch or plus player, been bouncing between 5 and 8 the last four or five seasons. <shrug>

Thanks. The Black Dots are tour proven. Before he went crazy, Robert Allenby won all of his PGA Tour wins with those clubs and were in Ian Woosnam's bag at the 2001 British Open where he was in contention at one point (too bad he was docked 2 strokes because he had an extra driver in his bag).

Thanks. The Black Dots are tour proven. Before he went crazy, Robert Allenby won all of his PGA Tour wins with those clubs and were in Ian Woosnam's bag at the 2001 British Open (the one where he was docked 2 strokes because he had an extra driver in his bag).

That's good to know, thanks. I knew they had a good following but didn't know they had won a major, with some help from Woosie. lol

No..I never said the Black Dots won a major. Everyone knows that Duval won the 2001 British Open.

Lol everyone but me. Thanks for the update. I had no interest in golf from 1995-2010. Going hard now thou. lol

Thats a good problem to have lol So the Aussie blades are considerably softer than the rev blacks?

I honestly haven't hit the Rev Blacks enough to say one way or the other.

I own sets of Black Dots, Aussie Blades, and A10s. No difference at all in feel to me. The A10s have an ever so slightly rounder, thicker, larger profile. Not mid-sized like the Red Dots by any means, just a hair overall beefier than the Aussies/Black Dots. All of them are great clubs. I moved on from them a few years back more out of boredom (i.e., ho'ing) than anything else, but they're all sets I don't plan on ever selling. Every time a thread like this pops up I get tempted to give them another go.

Wow very nice lefty set. Impressive to have them in the bag for what 7-9 years. Those babies have saved u a ton of money on new clubs. Priceless. Hopefully my Rev's will send a few misc sets i have to the BST. lol

I think they have been in the bag for 12 years if I remember correct. Pissed my coach of that I kept them and sold the set I got from school each year :)

Yeah I sort of ended up with 3 sets. Got a well played set with rifle 5.5 which I played a lot and loved the combo. Picked up a set with R300 because they went to 2 iron and I got them cheap. When a set with about 2 rounds on them still with the factory headcovers on a string came up with s300 well I sorta couldn't resist. Can't get too much of a good thing. Right?

Transition is really good in look and feel into the blades. But they are a specifically designed combo set.

When you see the black dots, the A10 tours and the Aussie blades in this thread you realize how many great club makers have gone by the wayside :(.
