Does your putter have to be "pretty"

Most every time I walk into a local golf shop I gravitate to the putting green. On a good day I only try 3-4 of them. Like the Sirens in Jason and the Argonauts (how is that for old-school), I am drawn to them. I don't need them, well maybe I do, but I can't help wanting and hoping to find the one that will cure all my putting woes (other than practice).

Does the looks of a putter make a difference to you? I realize beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when you are out with your usual group of golf buddies, would you rather be seen with a sleek, stylish, expensive Scotty (insert exotic brands) and miss a few more putts than you should, or pull out your RAM Zebra and drain them from everywhere?

I would use a soup can duct taped to end of a stick (not anchored min you) if I could make more putts.

I guess I'm in both camps. Still using that huge chunk of brass in my avatar Cobra Anvil 005. Got it for $5 at a swapmeet about 1990. Still the heaviest putter I have ever picked up and someone had drilled a couple holes to lighten it before I got it.

Back to my original point. It had a black enamel paint that was pretty beat up. After about 12 years I stripped it, then polished, then wrapped it up in a rag soaked in salt water to put a patina that would not glare. I think it looks pretty cool. Never met another golfer that agreed with me.

http://www.golfwrx.c...efinish-thread/ post #8 shows pics right after it came out. It has now settled down to a more subtle finish.

I also filled in the engraved and sight line with black enamel.

You have to like what you are looking down at every time or else your confidence will go into the toilet. That being said, whatever makes the ball go into hole (sparking new or sparkling with nicks), run with it!!

pretty much this

I say no but ideally it is "plain". No inserts, preferably no alignment lines, the least possible branding and logo stuff, certainly no decorations that I can see at address. I want to see the face of the putter aligned on my intended line and ignore the rest of it so less busy is good when it comes to looks.

Oh and no fancy finishes that turn funny colors if there is fertilizer on the green.

While I bag a 10 year old Scotty with a ding or two, given your scenario, I'd bag whatever makes the putt. Case in point, I went through a dry spell and bagged a center-shafted Bettinardi Baby Bee. That thing looked uglier than a Zebra ever imagined but it sunk the putts. I received more comments about that putter than any other. Either because of it's looks or because I made the putt.

The answer to better golf is hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Yes and it must be free of nicks!

As long as:

1. The topline isn't all dinged up which can mess up my concentration and focus.

2. It isn't too shiny on the top to the point where the light is distracting. (reflection)

3. I made the putts.

I don't care what it looks like. My favorite putter looks like a cross between the rear of a 57 Chevy and some sort of a spaceship. Gets lots of strange looks. And I could not care less as long as it speaks up for itself in defense by making the money shots.

I use an Odyssey Big T blade, so obviously I don't care about how my putter looks.

I used to have about 10 putters and put one in the bag every few months, that didn't work well at all, sold everything, and got fitted by Callaway (2013) to my current player Odyssey White Hot Pro V-Line (390g head, tour version, see sig for specs), haven't looked anywhere since, it just works for me, so I guess looks would matter a bit, but functionality would overtake looks...

I've used both types ... putters that looked like they were pulled from a dumpster fire and shiny new ones that needed to be oiled after every few laps around the track.

For me, it's a little less stressful to have a bit of a junker that starts every time, don't care what new scrapes & dings it may collect.

i like them on either end of the spectrum but not in the middle....my newport is a rusty dinged up mess.... in my younger days ( ive owned it since 1998) i played it without a headcover....its finsih is rust except the bare ball mark on the face ..... love it ! also love a brand new shiny stick too... but in between ( stainless with a few dings or carbon with a couple rust spots ) will drive me nuts... so yes and no...all or nothing i suppose

Putters and I have a love hate relationship LOL. I currently have over 100 putters and change VERY often. They don't have to look pretty just they just CAN'T be dinged on the topline. The more putts they make the "prettier" they look!! And when they don't make putts any more they go into time-out with the others:)

My putter has to get the ball in the hole in as few strokes as possible. It doesn't matter what it looks like.

IMO a high-maintenance finish can be just as distracting as heavy nicks/gouges, and rampant corrosion.

My putter has to inspire confidence when I look down at it, and if I'm thinking about that nick towards the toe on the topline or, "geez this fert is gonna be hell on my carbon" then my head isn't where it needs to be.

Brushed stainless, naked sole, simple stamping, rounded topline, sight dot - that's my workhorse right there. I also have a worry-free patina'd BBC that can pinch hit if necessary.

Back in my competitive shooting days the guys scared me the most were the ones that showed up with guns that had obviously been handled and shot the most In general those were the guys who practiced and dry fired the most and they were often the ones that won the matches. The guys with the shiny new guns were usually the ones trying to buy competence. In shooting and golf you can't buy competence.

Having said all that I'm like most and new and shiny things attract my attention......
