Not unexpected but sad for him and sad for golf. After taking his time to get back from his latest injury I thought he would be able to compete this time even if it wasn't to his former levels.

I find it difficult to believe that Torrey Pines 2008 will be his last major.

I wish there was a wheelchair tour. (i recall seeing some very disabled vets playing with prosthetics, etc...)

I would enjoy keeping his competitive nature around the game at any level!

I thought he was talking about shooting 67 to get back in the tournament yesterday and that he was hoping for blustery conditions?!? What a disappointment.

Wow, bad back sounds ominous. The lack of specificity is not good. Perhaps
that is why he seemed so subdued out there. That might have been just a sign
of resignation that he'll never be the player he once was. It'll be very sad if
he's done. I hope he's not and hope we hear something more soon.

Just checked the European Tour site and saw this. I think the penny has finally dropped and he is realising he cannot play like he wants to anymore. Sad news.

the last 20 years have shown he's the best ever player no doubt but geez an out and out compulsive liar and he's trying to convince the world his back is 100% yesterday.

Actually I think he may just have a stiff back. He was clearly swinging to protect it in Dubai, but he looked quite fluid in the Bahamas, why all the doom and gloom?

So much for 4 tournaments in 5 weeks. Sounded too much when it was announced. Waiting to hear he's pulling out of the rest too.

It was very clear watching him yesterday he was in pain after a few shots, when bending down to line up putts, etc...
Anyone who has ever had back spasms knows you can't do much of
anything when you have them going on. If he was actually playing
while having back spasms that is friggin amazing. I had them once
and I could barely walk let alone play golf.

On the good side if it was spasms then there's still hope he can get
back out there and play........in L.A. We'll see.

re people saying he looked good at the Hero Challenge. He still finished near the bottom of the field and crucially his best round was on his own, first out after Rose withdrew. So he was playing on his own, in 50 yard open fairways, with a hundred people or so watching. That's probably as close as Tiger will get to a practice round on Tour. Thousands watching him on much harder courses is the standard in the events he'll play. Unfortunately Riviera is going to be hard as well, good luck hitting those fairways. PGA National not much better.
