The Olympic Golf Course in Rio closed

Read in the Guardian that the $20m facillity has shut down after failing to attract enough paying players to maintain the course and facilities, with a report late last year saying that 20 was considered a good crowd, and the greens staff were not paid, then laid off.

Another example of big spending on the Olympics which are then just left to rot.

A vile waste of money in a country where clean water is not a sure thing for a lot of the population. The Olympics is just one big con these days.

Indeed, the Gil Hanse design was said to be in trouble for a while but according to Golf Channel reporter Rex Hoggard (a much more credible source) the track is in fine shape and employees are being paid. Read it yourself :

Ultimately it's not the Olympic committee who made poor choices, it was the city of Rio for wanting to host the Olympics and approving the spending for it. Cities like Rio should not crap shoot investing in special events if they cannot afford to. That said I have no information to know if they ended up making money on the whole deal or not, so maybe it was a good choice... but either way it was their choice to host or not. No one held a gun to their head and they could have withdrawn their application or turned it down.

That is too bad...any other recommendations in Rio? Will be there for ~2 weeks in Feb for work. Hope to get a couple rounds in...

I've heard the course is actually doing very well. I played it the month after the Olympics and was very good and I recommend it highly. The other coruse I played in the area is Gavea, which is an old Stanley Thompson course. It is tight in parts, but a lot of fun.
