Found a Sleeper Set of Irons

It's been a while since I have posted but I figured I would dive back in. A little background, I'm a fairly high SS player, (122-124 with the driver), and I hit a medium ball flight with my irons and just a tad too much spin. I saw a set of Callaway X Hot Pro 3-PW with the KBS C Taper 130X on ebay of all places and decided to purchase them with low hopes, mostly just to test the shaft. I live in Ohio so we are still into winter and it is cold but today was 40 degrees out and sunny with hardly any wind so I snuck out on lunch and I am so happy with the performance of these clubs. I have played Nike VR Pro Blades and the Nike Vapor Pro over the last few years and honestly there is no comparison. The local golf course has a few practice holes and they were open today so I went out with my gamer 6 iron, a Nike Vapor Pro blade with TTDGX100 in it and took the X Hot Pro along side. The new set of Callaways went longer, a touch higher and cut through the wind like it was nobodies business. I was hitting my Nike 6 iron about 200 yards which is nice considering how cold it is but the Callaway was flying at least 210 on a much better line and I was just blown away. Will be posting Trackman numbers next Tuesday but I had low hopes for these irons and I honestly might bag these this year.

I'm really enjoying them so far. It's just a different flight than I am used to. But I was hitting into a slight breeze and the ball still did not want to be touched by the wind and balloon up.

I did the same thing. Found a cheap set of Srixon Z355's & said what the heck & bought them. wasn't fit for them or anything but they play like I was fit. I never really looked at Srixon before but now I'm curious about the Z565 irons. I do wish they would have more options for left hand in their woods & hybrids though. Kind of hard to build an entire set of Srixon's with what they offer.

Driver: Callaway Rogue STMaxLS 10.5 Degree

5 Wood: Cobra LTDxLS @ 17.5 Degree

Hybrid: Cobra King OS 3-4 Hybrid @ 20.5 Degree

Hybrid: Cobra Aerojet @ 24 Degree

Irons: Taylormade 2021 P790's 5-AW

Wedge: Taylormade MG3 54 Degree

Wedge: Callaway Sureout 2 @ 60 degree

Putter: PXG Closer

That's so true. Fantastic clubs, just hard to find places to demo and test them extensively, at least in my area.

...I'm a fairly high SS player, (122-124 with the driver)...

Yeeeeeaaaaahhhh, you're in the top 0.1% of golfers in the swing speed department you can drop the "fairly" and add "very". I swing a driver around 115-118, and recently purchased a TM Rocketbladez Tour 3 iron with c-taper 130x, but it still seems to go a little too high. My mp-30 2-iron with x100 (hs I think) goes noticeably lower, but carries just as far and rolls out more than the TM RBZ. Just goes to show that shaft choice is so individual. Glad you found some clubs that fit you, feels good man.

I'm giving them another go today. Hitting a couple new drivers as well today and just want to find some equipment that is working with my swing changes. I'm trying to switch to a fade across the whole bag, because the draw I normally hit moves 10 yards or so and whenever I hit a fade it moves maybe 3 yards so I just want to tighten that up.

Whats the loft of the 6 iron you are hitting 210? So you carry a 6-PW and a half dozen wedges? Thats a difficult bag set up haha.

My 6 iron is 31 degrees in the Callaway set, 32 in my Nike set. I am not a fan of beefed up lofts. The clubs don't look right to me.

Do you mean 41 and or 42 for the PW or do you mean your 6 iron as you mentioned? Because 31 is my 6 iron and that would be one jacked PW.

Because these are GolfWRX claims? We all hit our Pw at least 200. DJ also has a fairly high SS.

Yes... sure does...

I'm closer to 175 to 180 with my wedge, and I'm happy with that.

Pitching wedge?!? I hope to God you're talking about your Lob Wedge.

Lmao. a 70-75 yard shot is just a 60 degree wedge that's back to the rib cage on both sides of the swing. My dad is a PGA Professional and when he got me started at a young age, he told me to focus on hitting the ball far and then we can find the fairway from there. I've also got a few things going for me, such as very long arms and strong legs that let me swing a bit harder than most. I've got a buddy that plays college golf here in Ohio and his SS last time we were on Trackman is 131 and I've seen him flush a PW 200 yards in pretty neutral conditions.

I like cranking up the variables on Trackman, and then do a little distance bragging on the WRX ... it makes me feel good.

Here's another 'sleeper' set of irons...or if you prefer, 'Diamonds in the Rough'

See pic below...If you are in need of a great iron set, here's a 'HOT TIP'... :diablo: ...but as they say, 'the devil is in the details'...so please read on!... :read:...because this 'tip' is for a limited time only!.. :hi:

2015 SLDR (3-9-irons) are available brand new as 'heads only' on ebay right now from one very well-known ebay seller. He listed these iron clubheads individually, so you need to add each to your cart to see a preliminary total and then have him adjust the shipping charge for the actual total you would pay. (All will be shipped together in a small box). I suspect these are surplus heads from Taylormade's custom department that just never got assembled into a custom set. This particular ebay seller is known to sell surplus items from TM's custom department! Here's a hint on his identity...He is known for 'steals and deals'....(That should help you find him).

There's a great bargain to be had here: Just add your favorite shafts and grips and you have brand new 'custom' set at an unbelievably low price. While you won't find a PW, you won't miss it either, as that club was the one 'weak link' in an otherwise great iron set. (I recommend that you use a PW that matches your other wedges... instead).

Note: These are actually smaller clubheads than you think if you only look at the first pic. However, notice the head size in comparison to the 2014 Tour Preferred MC iron in Pic #2 below. (The TP MC is a smallish' better players iron' while the SLDR is clearly a 'tweener', (i.e. something in-between a player's iron and a Game Improvement Iron). As such, it's a good choice for a very wide range of handicaps.

(Also, I suggest you check out Mark Crossfield's YouTube Review of these irons!)

  • 3 weeks later...

The more I hear about collapsing 'face slots' on the RSI's, PS's , and now the new 2017 M-irons, the better these 2015 'sleepers' look!.. :lazy2:

Perhaps these irons would have been more popular had TM not announced so many iron sets in 2014-2015, and had these come with 'real' C-Taper shafts, (like the C-Taper Lites), instead of the proprietary, ('made for') 90-gram C-Taper 90 shaft that is exclusive to TM, and not a normal KBS C-Taper shaft available for sale outside of TM. The latter proprietary C-Taper 90 launches too high and spins too much! The extra high launch was mentioned multiple times in Rick Sheils review of these irons... :swoon:...

I bought mine 'heads only' and installed KBS C-Taper Lites. That seems the perfect match for these SLDR Iron heads! You can do the same, (as mentioned in Post #20 above), but only if you hurry before all these 'heads only' sets of SLDR irons are gone!..

ROFL!!

He do love him some sldr tho!

Best thing about Bob is when the guys attack his vaunted driver and he schools em' (correctly) I love it!

C taper 130x is a fantastic set of shafts Bro as they flat out perform. I had those and really liked them just not as much as the x700 aka DG tours I play now. These are a little lower in launch and the feel is more what im used to while being very straight albeit a little shorter

When it comes to the SLDR irons, the KBS C-Taper Lite is a better choice!...(110-grams in Stiff Flex). Keep in mind the stock (proprietary) C-Taper 90 that comes with the SLDR irons weighs only 90-grams. The C-Taper 90 is a TM only 'made for' shaft and was never available from KBS. CTL is a great shaft however, with a lower launch and much less spin than the stock SLDR steel shaft. It is also the stock shaft in the much heralded UDI Driving irons.
