Grayson Murray Might Be On To Something....

Well, Grayson is chirpin again via twitter and his peers and other peeps are chirpin back...

http://www.golfchannel.com/news/golf-central-blog/murray-calls-out-boring-peers-social-media/?cid=Email_FridayNL_20170303

I've made my feelings pretty well known regarding what I believe to be the appropriate twitter subject and content though I think that he has a point on this.

Obviously the Player would have to carve out a block of time, say 15-30 minutes across a day to participate if they do not usually do it throughout the day as some seem to do.

He has a valid point about "post-Tiger" popularity and purses and I do not think that the full effect or impact of this phenomenon on the Tour popularity and purses won't be felt for another 5-8 years.

Should the Players do more to help promote their Tour aside from showing up and Playing and if not, what would you do to promote the Tour knowing that the sunset is extremely close on Tiger's career, if we haven't already witnessed it?

What say you all?

Thanks in advance for responding?

The way I view it is players on the Tours are "contractors", because they must follow the rules stated by the PGA, but their "employment" is purely optional.

With that being said, I think there should be more new guys trying to build the game up. People want to look up to Fowler/Speith/Thomas however we don't (not that I've seen at least) see them doing anything to grow the game.

I'm not a basketball fan, but think of Kent Bazemore. RIGHT after he was drafted into the NBA he immediately started working to give back to the communities around where he lived, created foundations to support great causes...and the like.

And golf is an expensive game to begin with, so it should have even more people pushing it!

Just my input, purely opinion.

It is not a bad idea, and on the surface this seems like it would draw younger people into interest in the game.

Whether that would translate to participation, attendance, and viewership...it seems unlikely. Heightened social media presence (young as the research is) doesn't always translate into action in the "real world."

You see this in the UFC really, where purses are (or were) 100% controlled by Dana White. Fighters are better off adopting crazy or outspoken personalities to generate heat on themselves, as more people will watch and they'll get larger purses.

This is true of most things that are entertainment primarily. If you are more entertaining more will watch. Not rocket science.

Of course, if you open your mouth and people don't find you interesting or even like you, it can have the inverse affect

two thoughts

1. being named grayson pretty much guarantees you will be a spoiled, narcissistic ******-nozzle... this kid doesn't stand a chance. half his twitter feed is him jawing back and forth with obvious trolls. how is that good for the game?

2. not everybody has the personality and charisma to be a good social media type... some could do more harm than good (see #1)

I think it was Faldo who said something to the effect that all the 'kids' on tour now-a-days see themselves as a Brand as soon as they enter their first event. They're not a Brand, they're a part of the Brand (PGA tour).

Would be refreshing to see the newbs just start stacking up results, the "Branding" will follow.

I think he has a point. There are numerous threads about a possible contractor in golf equipment manufacturing, speculation about the golf channel preparing for a sale or bundling with something else; it is fair to say we are certainly on the downward-side of the Tiger effect, but I believe we certainly haven't reached bottom. As of 2 months ago, Tiger was generating tremendous interest and was the headline on every major golf medium. People, including myself, still believed he could come back and be at least a portion of what he once was. With a couple of false starts on the Big Cat's part, it's fair to say people will get tired of getting their hopes up, and overall interest in the game will wane.

There will still be a steady level of golf interest out there, but the superimposed Tiger-mania bell curve (x-axis is time, y-axis is excitement) will no longer be a factor.

Thus, I think Grayson is right to say that if some of these tour players want to protect their future, they should take more of an interest in growing the game. There are a lot of comparisons that can be drawn between this and the real world. Looking after our grandkids, and all that.

I'm sorry, he doesn't. Acting like a clown on social media isn't going to grow the game.

Wow - guess I hope you never get the chance to spend any time with my son Grayson - he's two, good to know you've already passed judgement on the kid.

Any chance you could let me know if any other of my kids are worth a damn?

I don't follow him on Twitter, or really follow Twitter at all, but I wouldn't say that his behaviour was clownish. There's much worse out there. You have to admit it's more interesting than those guys who are just promoting new products, though. Actually, you don't. But you do!!

Dude has missed 6 of 9 cuts this season, and he's bitching about others being boring on social media?

Between this and the complaining about the DeChambeau WD a couple of weeks back, I'd say Mr. Murray is well on his way to being branded the latest wannabe jackass on tour.

Just for comparison, there isnt a more "boring" personality out there than Steve Stricker. But, 12 PGA Tour wins and $42 million later, he's got his own foundation and has started his own tournament on the Champions Tour. Why? Because he's NOT a jackass on social media - he carries himself professionally, treats people with respect, and goes out of his way to be liked on Tour by his peers. And he's good at golf. Ditto for a guy like Jim Furyk. Perhaps Grayson should be trying to emulate THESE guys, not try to blaze some path on the social media highway because he can't hack it on the PGA Tour.

And just to clarify, Im not saying being on social media is bad. But at the same token, if that's his focus, then its easy to see why he's missed 6 of 9 cuts so far this year. If anything, Grayson should be saying something like "Im sucking a** this year on tour. Im gonna stop posting on Twitter for a while and focus on my game", not something like "You guys are boring"...

Just speaking from my experience of meeting about a half dozen graysons in my life... and that kid that plays bball for duke. I'm sure it's just a coincidence ?

There alot of people begging for younger people to come on their empty courses to learn and play but young people cant be bothered to put their phones down for 4 hours to enjoy some exercise and fresh air. The problem is not exclusive to golf. Soccer fields and baseball fields are consistently empty. I worked junior golf day camps and the #s go down every year. Ask anybody at the local level, course GMs teaching pros, etc.. no PGA tour pro can fix that, its gotta be grass roots. My home course (private CC)had to swallow its pride and allow members to brings friends, family, coworkers 8-10 times a summer for free to hopefully expose them to the game and potential membership. thats what happens when a course goes from 1200 members to 400. this trend is happening all over north america. I got my 8 year old nephew into golf this way. He played 3 times with me last summer and got the bug. Hes now obsessed. Im teaching him the rules, etiquette etc... I bought him a set of used USkids clubs for 50$.he wants to come the course everytime now. Wants to come and watch me in tournaments. the only way to grow is to get people to the course/range but thats the challenge. I love golf and everything its taught me but I was exposed to it and loved it immediately as a child which is a privilege not everybody gets.

I hate to say it, but golf is going back to the same place it was before Tiger. The media coverage will shrink, purse sizes will get smaller, and fewer casual sports fans will tune in. It doesn't matter what they tweet or how much access they give, bottom line is that they just aren't that intriguing to anyone other than true golf fans. While it has gotten better over the last two decades, golf still remains a very expensive, time consuming sport. It's hard to get good and stay good at it. Today's youth has the attention span of a gnat which isn't conducive to golf. I consider myself to be a golf fan, but since Tiger started being MIA my willingness to watch 4 days of golf has dwindled. And I like a lot of the young guys on Tour, but it's just not the same without Tiger.
