they've teased this so much the last two weeks that I feel like I've seen the show already...

did any of you catch when he says "to be good at golf you either have to be really smart or really stupid" (paraphrasing)? so did he just call a lot of tour pros really stupid? b/c I can name a few that you wouldn't necessarily call "really smart" (in the way he means it)

anyways, looking forward to watching it tonight and I assume we'll have much more to discuss after...

I think he is recognizing that the ability to tune out the "noise", or rather, the ability to tune it in, is a desirable trait amongst professional golfers. I don't think he is standing on a high horse, but I do believe he believes he is an artistic genius on the course, which would be hard to refute.

so you think he's referring to himself as the really stupid type?

umm...nope.

"I do believe he believes he is an artistic genius on the course, which would be hard to refute."

I probably should have inserted an "however" between my two phrases, though.

I agree with his premise btw, I just wonder if the way he worded it may cause some backlash

NBC/Golf Channel has over-hyped this episode so much that it could never deliver what they want us to believe.

Plus, now I hear that it's been expanded to two episodes, so I'm getting prepared for a ton of commercials and that stupid Feherty song to be implanted in my brain.

I am DVR'ing the episode, and will also DVR part 2, and just watch them all at once. With all the commercials cut out, it should only take me 35 mins to get through both episodes.

I actually don't agree with his premise. Perhaps he should have rephrased it as, "to be great...". There are a multitude of good players on tour that are neither geniuses nor dummies. I'm thinking of the plodder types - Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, Darren Clarke, etc...These guys can demonstrate finesse, shotmaking ability, coolness under pressure, but I don't believe they exemplify the artistry of a Phil or Seve type. Nor do they show the indifference of a DJ or Fred Couples type.

And then there are the exceptional talents - the gifted ones. I would put Rory, Jordan, and maybe John Daly in this category. Guys who the rules don't seem to apply to. Not necessarily a genius or a dunce, but simply granted a God-given ability to hit shots with a combination of strength and speed and accuracy that only a select few can match.

I think Phil is actually trying to nominate himself to genius level by this comment.

if you take it literally (which I didn't think you did based on your initial post) then I agree with you

however, I think he meant it more in the vein of analytical players vs feel players or left brain vs right brain... and in that being his premise I agree that you either have to be all in one way or another, can't be straddling the fence- which is where probably 90% of amateurs are at.

then again, he could just be FIGJAMMIN

Couldn't help it!

Nobody talk about this right now because I'm taping it while the wife and I watch our "program" (The Voice) like a couple of old folks and I doubt I can stay off the forums for an hour!

Good stuff! Toms story is hilarious.

Looking at those pics of young Phil, brings the Monte story of making him cry to mind.

I guess they had to go two weeks because he's only allowed to say "that's how I roll" once per episode.

Wish this one was deeper ala Johnny Miller, Billy Casper and others, but it is entertaining.

It was a good first part. Interesting. I can see why people like him. That being said, I know people that have known him for a long time. They tell a much different story.
