Stenson's sound

What sound does everyone keep referring to? Is he really the only one with it? What causes it?

He hits it really hard and really flush.

I would like to see him live sometime. From what you see on TV, his swing looks kind of effortless or rather, powerless, you cannot se him like whacking it like Rory does. His swing is a set of movements that do not really look powerful but obviously are.

He does look like he hurts the ball. Would love to witness it first hand. I love his swing trigger. Tried to emmulate it - total fail.

If you really pay attention to him hitting the ball, the sound is louder and has a distinct tone to impact.

That said, I firmly believe that some of it has to do with playing those old legacy black Calloway irons that have that big open cavity back with that large undercut channel at the bottom of the club. I think it causes them to "resonate" a certain way that other clubs don't. As hard as he hits it, combined with the unique iron design that I don't believe any other tour player uses, gives impact a particular sound.....but it is different.

He also had more ball speed than the other competitors with a mid/long iron. There was a protracer last year on a par 3 that I wish I could locate and Stenson was low/mid 140s ball speed and the other guys were mid/high 130s. Pete Cowan is also huge in his teaching on max compression and forced applied to the ball equating to accuracy.

It's nonsense. He hits it pure, and compresses it very nicely, but there are dozens of others on tour who do exactly the same thing. It's just something that the commentators can fall back on when they have nothing else to say, and they do it time and time again.

I agree. I'm not saying I hit it like Stenson but it's a similar sound when I'm playing my Legacy Blacks. Again, I am not comparing myself at all to Stenson!!!

Not sure if anyone heard the recent NLU podcast with Matt Every. When asked about other golfers' skills that standout, he discussed Stenson's ballstriking. He said the sound it makes when big Henrik hits the ball is like no other player.

i thinik he grips very firm... i can produce that sound when i have a death grip on and crunch the ball... my ear drums hurt...just not hit it anywhere as far, nor as high as he does.. he simply swings like a Viking with a bone to pick with the stationary ball...Vikings like moving things

He has they call a "heavy hit". He has a connected swing, arms tight to the chest. He's hitting the ball with his entire upper body.

He says "I feel I'm hitting the ball with my right shoulder".

So, he's really thumping the ground and takes large divots.

That swing does not lend itself to hitting driver well. He hits that 3-wood most of the time - with no tee!

Stenson's strikes do produce a unique sound. Very cool.

I remember Nick Price produced a very distinctive and unique sound back in the day with his irons as well.

This is ridiculous that guys think he hits it the same as everyone else. CLEARLY, it's unique or all of these tour pros wouldn't be gushing over it. You really don't think someone grabbed one of those legacy blacks to make sure it wasn't just the club? SMH...

Try to get to a tour event where some of best ballstrikers are playing, e.g mcilroy or stenson. When you hear the sound most players in the field make you think it's really pure but when you hear the likes of mcilroy strike irons it's just completely different. There will probably be some trackman gurus who can explain this very accurately.

What I see is someone who is able to execute a very powerful swing while giving the appearance that it is very easy for him. In other words, I see a very powerful golfer.

I see a strong dude really hitting it with his core and shoulders, really keeping the club in front of him. He's not creating speed with flexibility, lag or any of that stuff. He's straight muscling the ball like swinging a sledgehammer. You can kinda see how his follow through shows that. There's no wrists or any flip at all just a strong rotation through. He's the dude swinging the huge heavy baseball bat and still getting the same speed as the guy who has to swing the light bat. It's amazing.

I can make a pretty distinct sound with my irons too........

I walked 18 holes with Stenson at last years Nordea Masters here in Stockholm Sweden. His strikes are insane. Another thing you notice is how high and straight his ballflight is. When you stand next to him his shots looks unreal. When I walked with his group he played with Westwood, another great ballstriker, but Stenson's strike and ballflight is something else...
