What defines a Senior Golfer?

Recommended Posts

How old is old?
:) As noted in another thread, the term "Senior Golfer", spans a pretty wide range. When you think of or some one says the term, what comes to your mind? Good? Bad? What's your definition? :cheesy:

50 or above is what comes to my mind :cheesy:

Just wondering, I saw that thread, "What Defines A Junior Golfer", just curious I guess. :)

I thought maybe juniors and seniors were closer together than that.

Well I play with some guys 50 and older that play just as good or better than some 30 year olds I play with so I think it is a relative term. Now I can clearly state that some of the 70-80 year old guys I have played with are seniors. I think 50 is a touch low. maybe 60 but I still think it comes down to how you golf your ball. (notice no old guy jokes Mac)

Boy you guyz don't realize how pleased I am that none have taken the advantage of this thread and jumped my schnitz. :)

I was actually informed that the USGA has established 50 years old as the official age of seniordom. Dang, I'm way over the hill. :cheesy:

This is a topic of great discussion with my dad and me...

I'm 39, my dad is 64 and between the two of us we have a combined handicap of 3 (I'm a +2, he's a 5)...

The guy may be one of the greatest putters that I've ever seen and he hits EVERY fairway. He hits it about 240-260 and can just wear you out. He can beat everyone in his group that he plays with and I would take him as a partner anyday for any tournament.

He loves being called a "senior golfer", because, in his words, " Dammit, I've earned it!" :)

Well I play with some guys 50 and older that play just as good or better than some 30 year olds I play with so I think it is a relative term.

I agree with this statement completely...

Naw Mac..never over the hill; I much prefer "top of the rock" and I plan to stay here for a long time cuz if I try and come down I just know I'm gonna fall and bust my keister! I thought USGA was 55 for seniors? Does this mean I have to sharpen my game and try to qualify for the Sr. Am. this year? Would that mean I qualify for senior rates at the muni?(i think those start at 60) I can't be no stinkin' senior, none of my kids is even 18 yet!

Shoe

I really don't know for sure what the age is, Wags told me it was the same as the Champions guyz, which would be 50, but ProZach said something about 55 being the age for Sr Amateurs quali here in Illinois. As far as I'm concerned, I think there should be another division past the Seniors guyz. :)

A couple years ago I entered a local tournemant, wasn't handicapped or anything, and I was in the Seniors open division. Let me tell you that the guyz who've just turned 50 have a distinct advantage over the more seasoned citizens. (I hope you guyz notice I'm capitalizing Senior, that gives us heightened statis and prestige like we deserve) Anywho, between the age of say 50 to someone who's 60, that is quite a jump, there are plenty of guys who are very long at that age. You don't want to kid yourself, after 60 there aren't really that many Big Balla's, good playa's but not too long.

I really started this thread as a poke in the ribs to the "juniors" and their antics and competitive measurings. I find it rather strange that some of us as we age lose that ability to kid and joke, and not take this here life too serious, but then again, that's just my opinion. :cheesy:

Those youngin's help to keep your edge sharp Shoe, their age extends your playing years.

On the Champions Tour, "Super Seniors" begins at 60, I think. That is probably more like what senior is in golf clubs. Even on Tour, a few of the low 50s guys can give the youngsters a run for their money, helped by maintaining fitness regimens and using the new equipment, like ProV1s and artificial hips!!

mjtoal

Probably a few artificial knee joints too. The three main guys on the Super Seniors Tour are Ben Gay, Jim Beam and Arthur Itiss, you can't hardly go to a tournament without them being there. :)

Senior golfer at 50, get real. At 65 I was working in heavy engineering and none of the younger set could keep up with me. Age ( being classified senior ) is only a number, I have met many in their 40s that would be considered senior just for their attitude to life. Me I am 77 and can still run rings round the snowflakes.

For amateur play it’s 55 pretty much everywhere. That’s the USGA standard and most clubs adhere to that. I have never come across 50 as the demarcation and I play a lot of tournaments. Interesting enough, in terms of what one PAYS in terms of green fees the senior discounted rate at most courses is at least 60 and often 65. So for paying the piper they’re happy for you be be a “young” 59.

Wow, a 14 year old thread dug up from the dungeon. Senior players in tournaments usually are 50 or 55 but at 58 I can still play with young pups.

Hey Mac, hope you're doing good.
