Jason Day WD mid round - Mom Has Cancer

JStang

Recommended Posts

Not sure how many of you just saw a very emotional Jason Day speak briefly after WD'ing from the Dell Match Play event but he was noticeably shaken and spoke about how he just can't get the diagnosis off his mind. He has obviously gone through a lot and lost his dad at a young age. As selfish golf fans, we have to wonder if he will tee it up at Augusta but most importantly thoughts and prayers to him and his family.

You could clearly see how much it was weighing on him. Kudos to him for going in front of the media and offering an explanation in such a difficult time.

Not sure the context but heard on "Out of Bounds" last night a recording of Day talking about no practice round this week, hanging out with Nick Watney, drinking Mountain Dew and playing Call of Duty. Saying your 12 year olds better watch out cause I could be coming after them in the game...something to that effect. Anyone else hear it. From Day's presser this week? Hope he had a fun evening.

Cancer is a nasty SOB! That was heartbreaking to watch and most likely we can all relate. I'm pretty sure we all know someone close that has dealt with it and we know it is real. My mom was diagnosed about 2 yrs ago and a yr later doctor's saying she was looking great then recently told she most likely has less than a year. My prayers go out to everyone with this nasty cancer and their families. Let's stay positive! My prayers go out to all that are struggling.

I'm usually in the "not surprised he is WDing again" camp, but that does not apply here at all. Wishing him and his family the best.

Yup all trolling and negativity is disallowed on this one. Prayers with his family. I wonder what his PR team and close ones are thinking to let him even show up to the tournament though. Maybe Jason thought he could clear his head a bit playing in the tournament. Either way, hope all goes well his mother for the time being and he's ready to go for Augusta.

Man I can't even imagine. To lose a parent to cancer then have the other parent in a fight for their life against it. Just sucks. No other way to describe it.

I'm right there with you. When I got the notification on my phone my first thought was "oh, what now?" and once I found out I felt terrible to just assume that it was just something minor.

Having gone through that phone call with my mother about having cancer, I can't even begin to explain what it feels like and I'm amazed he was able to play golf at all. Best wishes to him and the Day family. Cancer is something I truly hope that nobody else in life has to experience.

My dad had lung cancer. If his mom has a mass as he described sadly it may not make much difference to operate. I regret every day not dropping everything and spending more time with my dad. I pray for all dealing with cancer...Day should take all the time he needs and then some.

I saw earlier in the afternoon that Day had WD but no details while expecting something similar to what he's gone thru in the past. When I found out his Mom had cancer and was facing surgery, I was stunned. I wondered to myself, how did he muster the strength to come to Austin in the first place?

The poor guy has to be a wreck. My heart goes out to him and Ellie, too.

Best of luck to Mrs. Day, Jason and the entire Day family.

I am like all the others on here when I saw something about him conceding and then withdrawing, I thought, Good Lord what now. Man that is just awful and tough to handle. I would imagine he thought golf would be a welcome distraction and decided to tee it up. Had this been a stroke play event I would bet he would have finished the round and possibly the tournament because you don't have to be at "your best" each hole and you can let your mind wander and relax. match play (especially at that level) is a whole other animal and you have to be "on" for every shot on every hole and I'm sure he just snapped and said "F this". prayers for him and his family, specifically that God provides them with strength and unity in a difficult time. God is in control and for them to pray that his mother has a successful surgery and that she is comfortable and that God provides the Doctors with the wisdom, sharpness and touch to have a flawless operation. Cancer can suck it

Golf can go on the back burner for however long. I hope all goes well with the operation on Friday and the recuperation and results are positive.

I'm pretty sure most if not all of you will have been affected at some point by some variant of this horrible disease. My thoughts with the Day family and a big #FUCancer

Hate to be the cynic, but doesnt he earn last place money this week the second he tees off?

Wish Jason and his family all the best (especially his mom).

But, why enter to begin with then.... Take care of the family, and take the tournament off to begin with.

I was a little skeptical because of his past withdraws....

I just watched the interview. I'd like to withdraw my above post.

Godspeed to Jason and his family, especially his mom.

Martin said the only reason Day came to Austin for the Match Play was that he felt a responsibility to the fans, and to his mother. "Truthfully, the most important thing in her world is him playing golf and being happy," Martin said.
