That's a cool article. I liked it a lot. Before I read this, I did not know a lot about him either. I remember his brother on The Big Break and that's about it.

I love stories where people come from humble beginning and work their a** off to overcome challenges to achieve their goals. I'm an English teacher and I teach my kids about Quest Narratives. This piece definitely qualifies as a Quest Narrative in my book.

Thank you for sharing it.

I didn't realize being upper middle class was humble beginings.

In a place as expensive as SoCal in a sport of expensive as golf it kind of is. I wouldn't quite at upper middle class but middle class is a humble beginning for golf.

I....I...I...Me....Me.....Me that's all the fool ever says

I was so poor I lived in the hood of Cardiff right by the beach.

My dad was a computer junkie and my mom was a real estate addict. Our house was only 2000sqft

I went to Torrey pines HS but I wasn't as entitled as everyone else because I had to work..boo hoo.

The hardest job I ever had was driving around a millionaire and working at one of the most prestigious courses in the country.

I got my free ride taken away becaue I was an a**. Wahhhh

I Talked one of my rich friends into bankrolling me so didn't actually have to earn money to get into tournaments

Seriously, PP is a giant DB. He can talk that poor me junk to everyone else, but people in San Diego know the truth, and he's an embarrassment.

You'd think if he really thinks his rags to riches story is the truth, he would have acted a little better, and been more appreciative of his blessings, then spending the last decade being a complete Jackass on tour.

From the tearful responses so far i guess I'm in the minority here but what is the point of this? He starts out by saying he wants to set things straight, that people say he's a jerk, but really he's a straight shooter. Even though, after his very specific and unambiguous comments about Tiger, he tried playing the out of context/not what i meant card. And narcissistic jerks always explain away their dooshiness this way. As though being a jerk and a "straight shooter" are mutually exclusive. Pat strikes me as the kind of guy that might run into an ex girlfriend and comment on how fat shes gotten and when she calls him a "Jerk!" he'd respond with "Hey, just straight shootin' here chubbs" and walk away thinking she was the problem.

And to listen to him tell the story of his childhood growing up in a two parent family with one in real estate, and another at IBM in a 2000 Sq ft house in which he apparently had his own bedroom, i mean my god, straight outta Compton yo! No wonder he's got such a chip on his shoulder, having endured such hardship at a young age. He's lucky he wasn't caught up in the street life of that neighborhood, getting busted for sharing insider trading tips with classmates dad's.. The Horrors are endless out there.

And the real problem is , he never goes about setting any records straight at all. Pat's own self importance makes it seem like the world and the media are against him, when in reality, he's just another athlete who has done the work needed to have a nice career and provide well for his family. This whole exercise reflects his own need for affirmation, as though he can't understand why the "Pat Perez, Heroic Over comer" piece has yet to appear in the New Yorker, or even (gulp) golf digest. He claims to have had a epiphany with a beer in one hand and wife in the other, realizing that media and "the noise" was unimportant at this point in life. Yet the very act of publishing this belies that entirely. Writing this is the opposite of tuning out the outside world. It's "Look at me!" when no one really cares either way.

Kymar -- my thoughts exactly. Well put. A Donald Draper quote seems to fit in quite well with PP in the context of the article:

"Everyone always wonders what's wrong with them; but to everyone else, it's the first thing they notice"

Personally and everyone is different and entitled to their opinion, but I read 3 humble brags (the daly story, beating a young tiger, and winning on ASU) and nothing that made my like him or change my opinion of him. Don't know the man personally so I can't judge him by that. But this wasn't a feel good story of overcoming hardship nor did it really explain anything about why he acts the way he does.

Nailed it....my same argument I had with a friend about it. Never heard someone b**** and cry about poverty being middle class before until I read his crap. I almost shed a tear for the poor fellow such a struggle....

^ looks like you seem to care. A lot. As well as the other guy above. What did he do to you guys? Kick your dog? Steal your girl? Live a life you're envious of?

Sorry man but it requires neither envy nor animosity to observe and comment on his self important diatribe. Just as I don't care what Briny Baird has for dinner at PF Chang's tonight, I'll have nothing to say about it until he insistently tells me how much i should care. .

If you want people to know the real you then you dont have to write an article refuting what people think about you. You live as your true self.

If people respond negatively to your behavior you accept it. You don't have to care about it, but you accept it.

I don't know what Pat Perez is all about and don't care. If he wants to draw attention to himself -- it's a free country. I just don't get what other purpose he has for writing this. And if the answer is "helps sell magazines" then fair enough.

I am still waiting to hear about the truth that he needs set straight...

10x56?!

Thats like 800k of luxury in NY.

And nobody had ac back in the day. You just lay there all night. Sweating, listening to crickets until you finally fell asleep just in time for the sun to come up and your dad to say,

"What, you still sleeping?"

Also, my car had a leak in the feul line that dripped gas onto the muffler. Very stressful.

And I had to reheat chinese food for dinner. Used to stir in some mustard. Pretty tasty.

In my humble opinion, I enjoyed the article. Nothing more, nothing less. Those who did not, you are absolutely entitled to your opinion.

Personally, I like to hear about different challenges for different people. For me, it is not a measuring contest of who had it tougher. I can appreciate any person's journey as they try to achieve the success they desire.

I always bring up Maya Angelou's quote on matters of setting the record straight and misunderstanding people. "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."

Briny doesn't like PF Chang's. He's more of a Hooter's guy. The girls like his hat.

Walter: Tell me Bobby, why do you play this game?
Bobby: I play because I love it.
Walter: Well I play for the money. I have to win. That is why every time we face each other I will always beat you.
