I think it's more that his putting hasn't been up to scratch lately.

Nothing to do with his wedges. Its the fact that the game is finally reach full circle and it is very difficult to compete on the PGA Tour when you are a short hitter. He doesn't have enough birdie opportunities as the rest of the field and like the post above said about putting, His putting is fine

Why? probably because there is no iron on the market like the AP2 and the 0311T isn't a good replacement.

Or, gasp!, he just isn't hitting it that well! Golf is hard. It's not his equipment.

I don't have any stats to back it up but he did seem to play better with the Titleist clubs. Maybe he was just playing better or maybe he's getting used to the new equipment.

His approach stats include his wedge play, and a new strokes gained metric isn't the be all end all (but it's what they have and some people get into it).

Agree, overall his iron play has to be more precise than other players because of length and because he may be laying up more that might affect that strokes gained stat in a misleading way.

Still. His wedge play this year hasn't been up his standards.

People dont understand. Its not the clubs fault its the confidence you have with the clubs. I played vokeys my high school and college career then someone gave me a set of callaway md3 and I have zero trust with them. My vokeys are so worn down but the trust and confidence i have with them cant be beat. Im loyal to vokeys the rest of my golfing life just like im loyal to playing mizuno blades. I played vokeys for the last 8 years zach johnson played them for 20 years. The years of playing the same clubs you develop a feel that is pro level

I would say it has more to do with his clubs than his lack of distance. He hits it plenty far to compete. Distance is probably the most overblown statistic in the game, but hey, it helps the marketers sell clubs! If it were primarily about distance, all WRXers would be on tour along with the LD champs.

What happened to that recent post from someone claiming they hit a 380 yard drive off the toe to pin high.

I'm sure he did.... I imagine he will get his tour card next year. I heard Zach wishes he had that guy's distance.

His driving has been worse as well. He was arguably the best short hitting driver on Tour over the years, now he's below average.

But, the other factor is age. Players on Tour have historically dipped the most right around 39 years old (he's now 41 years old).

stop with the reasoning. People on here don't like that.

I mean, it has to be the gear.... Ian Poulter switched back to Titleist and ..... oh, wait......

It's more likely that Zach is going through something similar to Hunter Mahan and Graeme McDowell. Financially secure, 2 majors is probably more than he ever imagined, and he's a huge family guy. There has to come a point where you start to wonder why you are still beating 500 balls per day. When he won the 2015 British he locked up the Hall of Fame and that may have been a huge goal for him. He's probably asking himself if he wants to dig down deep and win one more major, make one more Ryder Cup team, or just hang out with the family. It happens to a lot of successful tour guys in their early to mid 40s.

This has way more to do with it than diminishing physical ability (contrary to popular belief). I think successful professional athletes across all sports have shown that their age is what they make of it (ie Brady, James Harrison, Phil, etc...).

It could be age. It could be his swing. It could be a lot of things. But, there's no doubt that his wedge play isn't where it was 2,3 years ago. He used to be dialed in on his numbers and now he's all over the place. I'm sure he's got a good idea what the problem is but sometimes fixing it isn't all that easy.

If the first statement above is true, then it would explain his lack of consistency. I think it has little to do w/ his equipment, and a lot more to do with his mental desire and/or physical ability and how they affect the amount of time practicing and playing.
