Anyone know how long DJ's irons are?

They look short. I know he's tall, but he also seems to bend more at the waist than others, and maybe he has long arms? Like his hands hang around his knees at set up with irons, as opposed to mid or lower thigh. Would be interesting to know his wrist-to-floor as well. If anybody knows, they would be somewhere in WRX...

the set i hit of his last year were standard length ...which is super shprt for a 6ft 4 guy ..normally .... they were a test set of modus 130X shafts in TM MB heads.... long story but some of his throw aways leak out around the Myrtle Beach area ( coastal) and through the "pipeline" make their way upstate.. pretty regularly ... they look short on him because of his height .... But he bends so at the waist that he can use them ..... i also noticed his lie angle is pretty flat ... That set of shafts is running aorund here on the BST .... but i never mentioned it because there is noway to prove the connection ... lol They were in my legacy black irons for a while ....with 1/2 inch extensions .

I've thought the same thing about his wedges. They look like kids clubs in his hands.

Totally agree. I wonder what his wrist to floor measurement is. Or if his wingspan is greater than his height. I'm curious because I'm 6'5" but I have really long arms (7'1" wingspan), and my WTF is actually shorter than most people's. I have been fit into everything from standard to +2". But I'm thinking with super long arms (as DJ might have), if it wouldn't be better to have standard clubs, as I already have one super long lever (my arms) and don't need another super long lever (the club) at the end of that lever...

Oh, and thanks BH. You know I believe you....;)

If it's true they are 2* flat he must have really long arms. BTW I remember reading Stewart Cink, who is about the same height has long clubs that are 4* up. Just goes to show how important custom fitting is.

FWIW I am 6' and have a wingspan barely longer than that and I play 1-2* up and have for years. Current are Ping yellow dot in irons and standard in wedges.

I think I am going to give standard length clubs a real look this season. Have been playing with anywhere between 1/2" over to 1.5" over the last three years. The more variables I can put in favor of consistency of strike and dispersion the better. And I have to believe all things being equal, a shorter club is easier to control and more consistent. Especially with these monkey, Gumby arms of mine. It appears to be working for DJ, who looks as if he's playing a junior's set, at least in his irons.

BC: What is your sleeve length for dress shirts?

7'1" wingspan really long!! I thought I was a freak (for golf) at 6'6" with a 6'9" wingspan (I wear 17.5/38). I would highly recommend a fitting over just winging it. My lowest HI was +2.6. Getting properly fitted clubs was a key for me. Back in 1999/2000 I had a set of Cleveland TA's. I was fit by the Cleveland rep at a demo day. My shaft flex and length were good, but the lie angle was not. A friend of mine is a top fitter and he later tweaked them and it was a eureka moment when I played with them after the adjustments. My ball flight really tightened up and it made a significant difference. I have basically used the same specs since. He fit me again for my current set and they built the clubs as well. Now I'll be 55 soon so I will be getting fit again as my current irons are 10 years old and I don't think I need Rifle 7.0's.

For reference, my 6i is 38.0" and 64.5* (So roughly 1/2" long and 2-3 degrees up.) Cardoustie had a good thread in the clubfitting forum for tall guys and club length. Do a search for that thread. Some guys go with 1/4" gaps (instead of 1/2") through the set, or make all the wedges the same length. My wedges are basically all 36.25 except the LW is 36.0" Having said that, I still choke down on all of them at times.

This older article was very informative as well:

http://www.golfwrx.c...ct-swing-plane/

I measured myself and was in the shoulder plane category.

Wonder where DJ would be?

Everybody is different: get fit and good luck!

Hey MM, dress shirt sleeve is 38/39. Can't get them off rack, have to be custom made. It's truly a freaky thing. I've had wingspan "contests" with guys much taller than me (6'10" NBA players who are very good at blocking shots) and my arms are always longer. I don't know what happened, lol.

I enjoyed the article about biomechanics. Something to think about. I've always been fitted for upright clubs, but I thought this was due to a swing flaw of early extension, lifting the handle, getting steep, etc. Might just be the way my body is built.

I have been fit a hundred times by a hundred different fitters. They all have a different opinion. I've been fitted into everything from standard to +2". Not super helpful. I've basically just resorted to taking out different length sets with different lie angles and just see how they perform head to head on the course. As of right now I'm thinking either standard or +1/2" will be the winner. And if DJ is playing so well with standard length clubs, and he is obviously a tall dude, this would only reinforce for me that standard clubs are worth a real look.

Oh and yeah, I read (and participated in) cardoustie's tall guys thread. I think my solution, if I do go with standard clubs, is to not go less than 36" with the wedges. Under 36" gets pretty uncomfortable. So 3i to PW would be standard, and GW and SW would be longer than standard. Also, FWIW, I play driver and 3W shorter than "off the rack. (44.5" and 42") and I really like the added control I've gotten since shortening them.

It would be worrisome if they couldn't dunk at that height. DJ could dunk with Mickelson's vertical.

Yeah, I've thought the same thing. Finau looks like he is putting with a 5 year old's putter.

i wonder how heavy they are

Me too. Says he plays DGX100, which isn't a surprise, but I wonder if there's weight added anywhere. Don't see any lead tape...

Tony used to play + 1/2" irons and a 34" inch putter, he is 6'4" with very long arms and huuuge hands
