Mixed brand combo sets

After considerable experimentation, I have come to the conclusion that I prefer the short irons of my Ping i25s over the Steelhead XR Pros I've been comparing then to, but prefer the mid-long irons of the XR Pros due to better forgiveness and less offset.

So I'm going to do a combo set with i25s up to the 8 iron, and the SH Pros from 7-5.

I know most people do combos from the same brand, but this seems to make sense to me.

The way I have it figured, the i25 and the XR Pros have lofts within 1 degree up until the 8 iron. I doubt I'd notice that, and for those clubs I'm not worried about distance.

Then there is a 6 degree gap between the the i25 8 iron and the SH Pro 7 iron.

This is a bit of a jump (and I may reduce it by bending the 8 iron strong), but it happens at about the point (150 yards for me) where I go from a get it close expectation to a get it on or about expectation.

The added forgiveness and (IMHO) reduced offset of the SH Pros long irons makes them more consistent in distance than the i25s. They are also easier to work, which is something I am trying to do to cut down on my evil miss, which is a pull/draw/hook.

Even aside from lofts however, the SH Pros are longer and if I had enough slots in my bag I'd carry two 7 irons.

What disturbs me most in the experiment so far is the aesthetics. I was planning on having all black set of irons (using the black TT XP95), but I hit the i25 short irons so well, and they feel so much better, that I'm not willing to sacrifice scoring for cool factor.

Being a lefty my choices are fairly limited b/s I like to do a blade / cavity combo set and most OEMS dont offer their blade in LH. I've played the Adams MB2's for years and love them, but I was wanting to get just a touch more forgiveness in the long irons so I picked up a Srixon z765 4-5i. Ive had no issues and loved the set up thus far.

I wouldn't mind a combo set of the same brand or series, but, like stated above, my OCD would not allow me to mix the iron set, I do have different brands in driver vs 3w vs wedges, but the irons have always been the same...

3 WOOD: Callaway Paradym HL 16.5*, Diamana Flower Band White, D+ 82X Flex, tipped 1" at 42"
7 WOOD: Callaway Paradym 21*, Tensei AV white 75g S Flex, tipped 1" at 41"

IRONS: Callaway Apex MB 7-10, CB 4-6 -- DG TI S400

WEDGES: Callaway JAWS Raw 50, 54, 58 -- DG TI S400
PUTTER: SC Phantom 5, Stability Shaft, 33.25", Garsen Quad Tour grip (Toulon Chicago as back up)

I would go find out what your distance gap between your ping 8 iron and Call 7 iron before you start bending, though the raw loft of them is large you may not hit the stronger lofted iron that much longer due to CG so get on a good launch monitor and hit the two clubs to see what needs to be done. if you are going to have a shop do the work im sure they will let you use their launch monitor. Plus they will be able to talk about their can you believe that moment for years after you have left.

So, every year I go through a slump that lasts 2-4 weeks. It's awful, I play like dog sh** and just search for anything that might make a difference. I've had a couple different shafts in a given set before, and yes, have used different brands / different sets to make up one set. Mainly because of this: My irons are blades, and I love them. Especially the short irons and the mid irons, but when I get to losing my swing, I'm not confident enough to hit the long irons, and it's all mental. I have CB's from the same brand, but I don't find the CB's to be any more forgiving than the blades, and that's the honest truth, and ball speed averages verified this on trackman as well.

So, I put the 4 and 5i from a different set in play. They're CB's as well, but they have some of the lovely, newer, technology built into them (tungsten weighting, inserts, etc.) and are much easier to hit (says my brain). Realistically, they're just not as harsh on misses and I wasn't as fearful of my hands rattling apart. This actually got me through quite the slump last season. It only lasted 3-4 rounds, but again, it was all mental, so picking the long irons back up from my regular set was no big deal once I was back to hitting the others well again.

I've played 3 different wedges from 3 different brands at the same time as well. Whatever gets the ball in the hole faster.

In NZ our season is just closing.

Last October i had the J33 CB's working real well at a course where Long Iron Accuracy is important.

A 175m par 3 (10th)and a 185m par 3 (these are Long for me!!?

I got on in both, the tenth was just after the half way Beer!! so Beer and Stable Swing go together.

Now i'm bagging MP33 that i am genuinely finding to be Easy to Hit !

So i may Combo J33 CB 4 and 3 iron or grab some 100 gram regular Graphite shafts for the MP33's!

Just bought Royal Precision Rifle 5.5 on friday so see how they go, softer tip i am told.

To SFDoddsy... re a Set with Feel...this equals Confidence. Can you find a Full Set with Feel and right shaft you Love???

Thats the Key !!

To FirePro Howdy Sir !! Cheers All .PS TM 320 TI 10.5 stock is Quite Good !!A straight arrow with this Indian!!

  • 1 year later...

For 1 tournament round, I played Z745’s 4 & 5 irons & Miura Tournament Blades 6-PW, with different shafts. While I didn’t win the tournament, it was 100% not the fault of my setup. I just wasn’t comfortable putting the Miura 4 & 5 butter knives in play that day.
