Watching videos from them their thoughts about the downswing couldn't be more opposite. What are you guys thoughts on the different methodologies?

Plenty of threads on both instructors in this forum. Easy to find with the search function.

George Gankas. No doubt. Prefer Monte to both, but still George. I think Malaska is a recipe for disaster unless you can consistently see him.

I've read quite a bit from both, and had some success initially with MM's approach but found it easy to overdo. Ultimately I find myself coming back to the "no turn cast drill" and keeping things simple.

This is more of a discussion comparing the two very different philosophies, not just talking about one or the other

In order to compare the two, one must first understand each.

On a purely tournament results basis at every level of competitive golf it's GG and not even close. See Sung Kang for up to the PGA level.

For a severely dumped under player Malaskas intents seem helpful but that is not the average 10 handicap faulty pivot wipe slicer.

Agree, I can see GG's philosophy being hard to get for an older or less skilled player

I have a hypothesis that each model is better suited to individuals depending on their physicality and physical capabilities.

I like the look of GG's stuff more, however I'm really dumped under at the moment so MM's method might be more suitable for me to get a bit steeper and get back on plane.

Has anyone had any success implementing just parts of GG's method? ie do you need to commit to his whole philosophy - posture, backswing, transition, rotation etc etc, or can you just pick bits of it and work on his rotation for example?

I would say posture is kind of the one "must have" that he implements with everyone. After that it's all about matching up the components of the swing to get desired ball flight for the individual, based on their natural patterns/flaws.

Monte Scheinblum. He's an amazing instructor, former world long drive champ, and all-around trill dude.

Looks like he's implemented GG's sit into the right and ER the left and keep the hands up quite well.

The gankas stuff is good, but there seems to be a lot of maintenance or a huge learning curve in getting down that lower body action. I was too much lower body, but not the good type - knees firing early and right hip popping out. I tried the gankas method and why I did see improvement, just too hard to keep in check.

In my opinion, Monte is the man. No buzzwords, just going to give you different feels or thoughts to fix your biggest problem.

I think Malaskas is more for the arm swinger and GG is more for leg driven. There was a video comparing the two styles actually and it's funny how the arm style looks like what MM does every time. Anyway, if you get the MM swing right it's not over the top though that's a common misconception. I've gone basically MM to learn solid ball striking and now to GG utilising better leg work for more distance. To me that's the best way to get better as MM doesn't concentrate on the legs while GG does. Monte on the otherhand says legs are only 10% of the speed so it's not crucial to learn that first. I agree as legs can really mess you up if you haven't trained your brain to strike the ball well yet. 10% to me is the last bit of distance gain I can get from technique so I'm going for the legs next. It's helped me get my 7 iron to 185 or so on a good normal swing, and that's a pretty solid distance for me. Not really 10% gain since I wasn't hitting without using my legs at all, but it's a lot more effortless.

I've gone from a swing too hard caster/EE guy to more proper swing primarily from these two sources. Crossfield and the me and my golf guys helped too but only as a couple of small tweaks and understanding the swing better (which is also important of course).

Malaska was a quick fix and fell apart for me. GG is tough unless you do online lessons and join the members site. GG is the winner of the two in my opinion.

I'm a MM guy but certainly his feels are not for everyone and can be easily overdone. I think it all depends on your tendencies. Dumped under, handle dragger, etcetera. That's me. It comes from being a baseball player for years before getting into golf.

Interestingly enough, I was on the range yesterday and three college aged guys, 10 years or so younger than me, set up next to me and they were discussing GG and his social media stuff. It was weird to hear him discused IRL. Then I saw MM on the "Jack" documentary last night. I thought those guys only existed on WRX and YT.

I thought the OP asked a pretty straighforward question. No need to bring up other instructors if the only purpose is to demean them or their methods.

GG pivot/rotation driven e.g. leave the arms up and rotate.

MM more or hand/arm based approach e.g. turning a steering wheel at the top of the backswing.

It really depends which feel works better for you. The MM stuff doesn't fit my swing feel, it got me steeper and over the top. GG has kept me behind the ball and shallowed out.

Other instructors to check out: Dana Dahlquist is along the lines of GG. Monte or Dan Carraher if their methods fits your swing thoughts. Bradley Hughes is another instructor who teaches a rotary swing.
