Carbon putter - Patina...rust?

Went to Bandon recently with a brand new carbon putter. Like in Bandon fashion, got rain on our first round. I had siliconed sprayed my putter before we went, but the putter started rusting within the round. I didn't even get through the round!!!! I wiped it dry after the first round (played 36), but it continue to rust on our second 18. Guess my headcover was still wet. I knew carbon would rust, but not that quickly.

Now the question is, do I get it refinished or let it be?

Is it raw carbon? Some WD-40 will help clean the rust up.

Refinished? You're going to be refinishing it a whole lot if you are that particular.

Rust looks very workman like. Calling rust "patina" is only for sissies trying to make their rusty putter sound more expensive for their BST ad. No, your rusty putter is not "developing a nice patina", it's a rust bucket!

Contrary to popular belief, rust on a putter is NOT oxidation. It's the leftover residue from a long history of birdie putts and par saves.

EDIT: Electrical grade silicone spray works great. Protects and cleans without the greasy mess.

Let it rust - at least for me, that's part of the reason I would get a carbon putter.

Copper plate it…no more rust and a nice patina will develop.

I let my carbon putters rust and I'd say you should do the same. I certainly continue to keep them oiled to keep the rust in check, but I loved the aged look of carbon. If you concerned about alway shaving a perfect looking finish on your putter, you need to get it plated ASAP. Carbon is definitely not for the OCD minded.

I like the rust. Or shall we call it, "vintage rustic".

Makes it look battle tested. Shiny putters are great, but I don't tangle with people that look like they have been battling back hoards of par putts.

Unless it's plated (like with nickel or copper), carbon is always going to rust. Black oxide and gun blue help slow it down but what you're really doing is pre-empting the rust by making the iron oxidize on your terms before nature can do its thing.

Many players want a patina of rust on their carbon putters. I personally don’t want rust on my putter in the same way I don’t want rust on my favorite rifle. Taking care of a carbon potter is a simple matter. I use a product called fluid film. It can be found at the big box stores like Lowes.It is lanolin based spray and is not greasy but more wax like. I use it on a toothbrush to cover my putter very well after use. I then put it in my head cover, but not a wet head cover, until the next time I play. At that time I wipe it off with my towel and it stays pristine with no rust. A brush can be sprayed down thoroughly with fluid film and placed in a baggie or bottle in your bag to be used during the round or mediately after.

Personally I would have the head polished and torched back to a deep blue.

Crap, just when I tbought I had a clear answer, something else to consider.... after all, it is a "blue" goose!

I just replied to another thread about carbon steel putters. IF you don't want it to rust... stop with WD40. Use Eezox instead. Eezox was specifically made for gun barrels which tend to be carbon steel. Eezox was made to fight and protect against the elements.

I used it on my carbon steel putter and it never thought about rusting. What persuaded me to use it was a gun enthusiast on a gun forum took an old revolver and coated half of it with Eezox and left the other half untreated...he then threw it out in the snow for a month or two. After that time elapsed he brought it in and the part that was coated with Eezox looked brand new......the untreated half was rusted to death. I was sold.

You can find it on Amazon and the price is based on the different amounts available. I went with the 1.5 oz bottle. Pretty cheap and worth every penny. I wiped my putter down about every 3-5 weeks and no rust ever formed on that putter.

Brasso to clean and Collinite 845 car/boat wax to protect would be what I recommend.

Rust=ant-glare!
