Cool Find-- Whitlam Center Shaft Proto (red monkey)

Thought I saw one recently on ebay...very nice looking putter. Gotta love the red monkey! Great find...Whitlam putters are awesome!

I just decided I *needed* that putter... no doubt the seller has more, seems like in his items for sale list there's been a Whitlam of some sort since I bought this one. The monkey did it for me!

That's a hot looking center shafted putter; what doe's the monkey designate?

According to the seller on that auction site, here's the story:

"This was originally made in a very small run for the Green Monkey Colf Course in Barbados. He had a couple putters left and made the monkey red. This is one of no more than 2-3 pieces ever made like this."

It is possible I bought into a good story, but I liked the monkey.

...not trying to be contrary, but assuming the putter is truly center shafted and weighted to support being face balanced, that's true. However, I have a few putters that are near center shafted (almost, but not quite in the middle) where the putter is not face balanced, and vary in balance by a fairly wide margin. For example, the Red X2 is almost center shafted, but has some toe hang (about 4:00 on a clock as I recall) - another, more severe example would be the SeeMore M1 - almost center shafted, but toe hang is almost perpendicular to the ground (12 and 6). Anyway, I can't tell from looking at the pictures of this putter whether the shaft is truly in the middle or just close, and I've been looking for a putter like this that is face balanced. Nice looking putter in any case.

I'd been curious about Whitlam putters for awhile (never seen one in person) - this monkey putter thread was the thing that finally prompted me to give them a call. Turned out that Mr. Whitlam himself answered the phone - what a nice guy. We shot the breeze for probably a half hour talking about his putters, bad backs and their relationship to heavy children, tax returns of various political candidates, bowling leagues, etc. Just a real treat to talk with the man. Anyway, the monkey putter came up in conversation and it turned out he had one remaining monkey putter hanging around the shop. In my view of the world, you just don't pass up the chance at a quality putter with a monkey stamped on the sole, so I ordered it.

Mr. Whitlam told me the story behind the monkey putters, and as mentioned earlier in this string, the monkey putters were made (and I wish I'd written this down - I might be a hair off on this) for a club in either Barbados or Bermuda, and I think he said he had made only 25 of them. I believe he also said that most of them had the flag of the country/island where the club was located pictured on the sole, and only a few had the American flag on the sole (Dave, if you read this and I got any of that wrong, please forgive me).

As far as the answer to the face balance question I wondered about earlier, he said this putter has a face that balances out at about 4:00 (give or take a couple of minutes) on a clock, or basically has a little toe hang. Couldn't say for sure that this is true of the putter that started this thread, but I suspect it is. The head weighs in at a nice 350 grams. I'm looking forward to seeing this putter in person.

that is one of the best center shafted anser style blade putters out there...dave's an awesome guy to talk to and deal with... ;)

My monkey putter got quite a bit of unexpected, but extensive use on some really nasty sloped, very fast greens over the weekend. If you are looking for this type of putter, I'd suggest you give one of these a try. Whitlam has more of this design of putter, just sans the monkey stamp.

i got the same putter but the irish ctr. it is not face balanced...4 o'clock is right

mine is 34.5" 2*loft...slight backward press :rolleyes:...no flipping tho...this was shown to me at Studio B abt 3 years ago

center shaft is the way for me...thats why the betti is outa the bag
