I think you've missed Jack's point.

So what is Jacks point? From what I read his point is that the modern ball is too easy to hit stupid distances, like the drive mentioned above.

Jack's point as a golf course designer is that it's expensive to go back and refit golf courses for today's distance. If Jack were in his prime right now, he'd hit it as far as Dustin, Rory, and Rahm with the new equipment. I doubt he's jealous of the distance these guys hit it when he's an 18 time major champion.

DJ is good and all but Jack is not only on a different planet from DJ, but they are in a different solar system...

Jack can say whatever the heck he wants...

ย

DJ is on the EXACT career pace of Billy Casper....which is GREAT but it ain't Jack...not even close

Nicklaus says a lot of self-serving stuff, such as trying to convince everyone that there was more competition during his prime years (which is patently absurd). During his prime years, Nicklaus won about 16% of the tournaments he played in, with thin competition at the top. Tiger won about 35% of the tournaments during his prime, with much, much, deeper fields.

ย

But obviously the equipment is much better than before, but everyone has access to the same equipment, and there a lot more top quality golfers out there. Also, unless Nicklaus started a strength training regimen to match today's top golfers, he would not hit the ball as far as today's longest hitters.

Nicklaus has an agenda and that is to create more opportunities for himself as a course designer not a tour player. I don't like any of his suggestions on how to "improve" the game so I don't really care what he thinks about golf balls.

Good question. What does golfgirlrobin think Jack's point was? Do we have to pay extra to find out what golfgirlrobin thinks Jack's point was?

It seems that most WRXers don't agree with Jack and limiting distance which I think is absurd... Screw it, lets get rid of COR limits, let them play whatever they want, we will build 10,000 yard courses and let them hit 500 yard drives with no curve because of ball design.... The game has changed due to equipment for the worse, it's no longer a skill game, the sweet spots so large it makes it so players swing as hard as they want and no curve to worry about with such low spin...

I think Jack's point is that he could compete with these modern guys, and he wants us all to know it. He had to walk both nines uphill on dirt fairways back in his day. These days, anyone can just roll out of bed and hit it 350. Walk into your home course grill room, and anyone who claims to have shaken Sinatra's hand will tell you all you need to know.

Actually, I do agree that the ball specs should be changed to cut down on distance a little. I just don't agree with all the other BS that Jack comes up with (including his worship of Mickelson after the Tiger sex scandals, but before we found out that Phil has a serious mega-million gambling problem and narrowly escaped prosecution for insider stock trading).

ย

Sure Jack could compete today, but I don't believe he would win as many tournaments today as he did against relatively weak fields (which included very few foreign golfers). 350 is an exaggeration, and everyone has access to the same equipment, so what's the point? If someone could invent a time machine to take Nicklaus' body in his prime years up forward to today, I personally don't think he would fare nearly as well as he thinks he would (but not saying he would never win).

I'm not sure, but there is no way he would've broken 80 with a steel shafted driver or a balata.
