PXG and Vertical Golf

So I want to start this off by noting two things: 1) I am by no means a PXG hater, 2) I am not sure this is the right to post and 3) for the purposes of this, I am excluding the LPGA and Lydia Ko...

So PXG is billed as let's just say a cut above other OEMs. And they have a solid stable of tour pros. But to the best of my knowledge they don't have any wins yet on the PGA or Champions Tour (I could be wrong about that, and this my whole premise is nonsense). But we saw John Daly win with that vertical groove driver. Seems that driver has been kind of sh@t on on this site. I mean, at least it now has "tour validation" for whatever that's worth, more than PXG (with earlier proviso that I may not know what I am talking about).

Thoughts?

Rocco Mediate won with PXG last year at the Senior PGA Championship. James Hahn (Wells Fargo) and Ryan Moore (John Deere) won with them on the PGA Tour last season.

You can't just exclude Lydia Ko... Is the LPGA not valid tour?

"For the purposes of this, I'm going to exclude anything that works against my argument... which I would've known was invalid from the start, if I took 10 seconds to perform a google search."

If Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, etc all switched to PXG, you'd have a Major Championship pretty soon. It's not the clubs. It will never be the clubs. It's the player, and it will always be the player. These guys can play with anything. PXG is not better, or worse, than any other club when in the hands of your best tour pros.

You are exactly right. I played in the Nashville Bell South Pro Am event in 1996 with Mike Hill who was playing a set of old Spalding irons( bird on ball model cira 1960) that were totally worn out. If he had given them to me I would have said thanks and then looked for a garbage can to throw them in. He shot 65 that day and we won the Pro Am by 3 shots, it was not and never will be the clubs

It's been two years, Charles Howell, Zach Johnson, Pat Perez, Schwartz, Ryan Moore, Kirk oh and James Hahn among others are no slouches...and all hang around top 10. I'd take that as a DraftKings team any day of the week. May not have many "wins", but alll very solid.

According to PXG, they are for the time being at least going to concentrate on recruiting new staffers from the LPGA tour (rather than the men's tour), because the women are less likely to want to play a blade type club, and the PXG hollow irons are probably better suited for the women's game (as well as the vast majority of amateur golfers). However, I assume that is mainly a budget issue, and they will still keep and possibly expand their PGA staffers, but not with a big budget necessary to sign a big name men's tour player.

PXG have yet to show profits, solid squad for a small cap OEM. If you change OP statement to top 10's, it really makes no sense. which todays tours top players is made up of 10-20 guys getting shuffled around all year. No pure dominance. Equipment is irrelevant. Tiger in prime could win playing "Ram"

Who else really dominated with Nike besides Tiger? and look where they both are now.

Well, Rory McIlroy comes to mind.

i know, I'm just saying thats another example of equipment not meaning much, his game actually didn't quite seem the same while on nikes staff.....wow....i keep forgetting about Rory, as todays tour is as i mentioned a new "Jason Day' every month. Anyone on here could name 20 great players to play a tournament and have no guaranteed winner....its so much different without Tiger's dominance...the casual golf fan may know 5 of the 20 names you put in that 20 man tourney, but all really great players, and anyone could win; odds would be a very tight spread, as there are so many great players at "that level". Golf is great for us right now, casual fan not so much.

PXG have yet to show profits

Bob Parsons (age 66) is a billionaire (estimated $2.6 billion net worth according to Forbes) who made his fortune with an accounting software company that he sold to Intuit for $64 million, and then later started GoDaddy.com.

Parsons told his club designers to not worry about cost when coming up with a design. Their clubs ($300 per iron) typically are priced at about twice as much as top of the line clubs from other manufacturers, presumably because of the cost to make them. So it is possible that they never show a profit. Hard to say what his heirs would do with the company if he died (unless there is funding specified in his will). But not sure it matters to an amateur player of PXG clubs.

I have no personal knowledge of Parsons or PXG other than what I read at their website and on Wikipedia.

If you find time and do any research on PXG actual finance, (not Bob Parson's pockets)...you would find they will show profits likely after 2017. You said it yourself, he is dumping unlimited amounts of money into a company. He knows he will make profits not concerned when. The money will comeback in profits. He would build his own custom clubs until right and call it a day if there were going to be no profits. I don't think you understand how much more of a niche market there is for his clubs, especially overseas. Watch when prices go up and people continue to buy. It's happened once, and people are buying more. He's not a dumb businessman. PXG in my opinion will be here for a while, with more JDM companies tapping into our market, and new OEMS to follow as they see that it works, there is a market for it. It's been proven or he would have closed up shop already.

I don't question what you say, and the clubs look good to me (although quite expensive). My point is that it is possible PXG would continue even if they don't make money. A person with a net worth of $2.6 billion is a lot of money to be bankrolled by, and Parsons obviously likes the idea of trying to create a product that is beyond what has been done before. To him, it could be a business and a hobby.

I don't know what kind of patents he has on the design (hollow clubs with some kind of plastic/foam fill), but if not, then PXG may face competition in the future. I don't think it matters to an amateur whether PXG goes out business down the road. I have Nike irons, and am not going to throw them away just because Nike doesn't make clubs anymore.

Yeah so I didn't really do any research. I couldn't think of a PXG golfer off the top of my head that had won. That's why I said I could be way off base here. I excluded Lydia Ko because she was the only person I knew who won with them and was just thinking of the men's tours. Not a sexism thing, just limiting it to the men's. Sorry gents

Quite the contrary, I do not think Lydia has ever won with PXG...
