Sky Sports are going all out for The Players this year so I imagine they will be on the 5th major chat as well over the week.

For those of you without Sky, they have rebranded Sky Sports 4 (which with the odd exception is basically the channel they show all their golf on) as Sky Sports The Players and from yesterday, it has been wall to wall golf. Yesterday they were showing the official films of past Players Championship, they have a live preview show and extensive coverage including screening the featured groups before coverage proper starts.

Essentially, it is getting very similar coverage to The Masters and The Open. As a golf geek who will watch a lot of it, it is brilliant but the whole "5th major" thing bores me.

I'm on the other side, it's a very important tournament. It's basically a WGC-level field except there is a cut and it's played on an iconic, difficult golf course. To me those things add up to higher quality and more compelling golf than some of the majors, particularly the PGA.

Glove: ML
Tees: 2 3/4

Ball Marker: largest poker chip in the world
Iron headcovers: wait, what?

The feedback system is annoying

Important? Do the pros prepare the same way for this tournament as the other 4 majors? Do they turn up a week before to check the course out? I think not....

Beats me, but it's worth the same amount of FEC points as a major to me that's pretty important. I have no idea how often pros go to tournament sites early when the course is the same year after year. The obvious exception is the Masters but I think anyone who loves golf would play that course as much as possible whenever given the chance. Again, I have no clue just an important tournament in my view.

Every year this happens. If your reading this golf channel.....it's not the 5th major so stop saying it. It's a normal tour event with a bit more glitz and glamour.

Does Sergio have 2 majors? Does Stenson have 2 majors? Even Tim Clark has a major!!! Tigers stuck on 16

About as long as it will take for the WRX threads saying it should supplant the PGA Championship which ACTUALLY DOES have the hardest field in golf. But to answer the second point, no, they don't have 2 Majors but with the added TPC win they are HoF eligible (not definite, but eligible).

And the FedEx Cup is a PGA Tour construct, so of course they will give it as many points as possible, as it is their flagship event. TPC doesn't give away as many OWGR points as Majors, though

Let's be honest...it has a stronger field and is played at a familiar venue, a la The Masters...the TPC in my eyes is a more prestigious event than the PGA. PGA is the 5th major.

The Players is at a major level

Exciting finish, lots of drama, same track every year

Too bad 11 didn't fall as 13 or 14 ... more Augusta like late eagle opportunities

If there ever is a '5th major' it should be in some other part of the world.

They could put it in France where it can hang out with the women's fifth major.

it is not a major and will never be called a major ... as some sirius announcers have said, it will be (possibly) the difference in a hof induction or a ryder cup captaincy

I think it absolutely will become a major. If for know other reason than it is OWNED BY THE TOUR. Given globalization I bet in 10-15 years we may have 6 majors (Players plus one in ASIA). OR....5 majors, with the Players replacing the PGA.

The Players become a major is a horrendous idea. It's a big tournament but it is not and should never be considered a major. The question of what is and what isn't a major in golf has been settled for 60-70 years, there is genuinely no reason whatsoever to mess about with that. Golf, possibly more than most sports places a huge amount of importance on it's history and traditions, four majors are our history and traditions now so why mess with that?

All of a sudden, we have no grand slam winners. Jack, Tiger, Gary, Gene and Ben - thanks for coming, but you guys aren't grand slam winners anymore.

I don't see any desire for a fifth major in tennis, I don't see any desire for a second super bowl. Things are great as they are, why mess with things.

Now that Jack's record is safe they should make the The Players a major. Having 4 majors was arbitrary anyway.

A grand slam in baseball is a 4 run homerun. A grand slam in golf is 4 majors.

Same thing with tennis.
