Putts per round?

So how many putts per round is acceptable for a 9 hole league? I have been averaging 17 putts per 9 over the past 4 weeks and have been missing numerous 8-10' and birdie putts. I almost feel there is nothing I can do better on the greens I'm playing. I changed the weighting of my Scotty to a 20gr heel and 10gr toe so it releases more and have shaved 2 strokes off from the first 3 weeks of playing. Even with the changes I think I hit the ceiling on what my talent level can produce. I tried all the new putters this weekend at Golf Galaxy and was dropping 10-15 footers with ease with the new Futura 6M but had a tendency to push the short 4-5 foot putts. My Scotty Newport excels in the 4-5' range and I make a lot of par putts from that range but it is also a product of not getting my 1st putt close enough. What is a good style putter for slow bumpy greens? My current handicap is 3.73 for the 9 hole league and shaving 1 or 2 more strokes would make a huge difference in the standings. I'm not even sure at this point if there is an answer other then putt better with what I have.

Thats been about my average as well. Putting has always been the weakest part of my game. The Grint says my average GIR is 56.7% with 33.4 putts. I regularly miss a handful of 5-8' putts every round. I just switched from a 2010ish Newport 2.5 to the new Futura 6m. I dont think the Newport ever fit my putting stroke, and i couldnt line the thing up to save my life. I've only played 18 with the 6m, but i did make a couple putts i ordinarily miss and did make a 25' birdie putt on the 11th hole. I also instantly had way more confidence on 3-4 footers.

I gave the Newport a good shot, but in the long run i think it hurt my ability to read greens due to a poor fit. I dont think i have a terrible putting stroke, but to putt "average" id need to spend an hour a week on dead straight 4 footers doing the tee drill to keep my alignment correct. Right away i was lining up the Futura a lot better.

To get where you want to be, you need to be hitting every long putt to within 3' and making every 3 footer. Anything over 6' is a coin flip over the course of a season, the stats will show that.

I'm working toward this. Have a long way to go. Had a 50 putt round on my golf trip, which I didn't even think was possible.

I have been using the Pelz balls to practice with and noticed that I struggle with getting the ball to roll true. Seems like the ball always skids the first few inches.

i personally shoot for less than 30 a round.... and i get that most rounds.. But it can be acheived 2 ways.. either your making birdies, or you are making 1 putt pars by missing alot of greens and getting up and down 99% of the tome... so it isnt the end all be all stat... what you need is less than 30 putts and as many greens in regulation as you can muster

For a 9 hole league, I think 16 putts would be pretty good, anything less and I'd consider that person a "Pretty good Putter".

However, what it might prove even more is that this player is actually an excellent iron player, as virtually any hacker could 1 putt if all that had left was a 5 footer every time. If they are constantly draining 20+ footers, or lagging that 60 footer to a tap in every time, that's a bit different. I generally seem to find though that on rounds where I have less putts, it's because I was hitting my approaches closer.

Short game is where my rounds fall apart, so I have started tracking all shots under 75 yards and GIR too.

If I hit all 9 greens with my last shot over 75 yards, I'm happy with 2 putts per hole. If I'm hitting 3 of 9 greens with last shot under 75 yards and still have 2 putts per hole then my round is a disaster.

As well as those pros strike the ball, they putt the lights out. Longest putt i made today was 4'. Total for the round was like 40'.

Good putters will get way over 100' a round. First time with a Scotty. Newport 2. Not a fan.

I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment if these are your standards.

Jason Day's longest make last Sunday was 6'2", and he lost in a playoff. Billy Horschel made approx 440' of putts for the week, and it was only the 4th time in his career that he had gone over 400' for 4 rounds; he's 6th on Tour in putts made from 15-20 feet, and he's made 23 putts in FIFTY rounds so far this year from that distance. Mark Broadie's research shows that Tour pros don't average 50% until they get inside 9 feet, and that nobody is consistently making 20 footers, even on Tour.

Take some pressure off yourself and get good at what the pros are ACTUALLY good at; develop great pace from 30', and develop a rock-solid stroke from 3' and in. Three putt avoidance is the key, not making bombs.

Putts per round is a misleading stat. You could have 36 in an 18 hole round and sill shoot even par. Putts per GIR is a better indication of how good or bad your putting is.

Putts per round is misleading, as others are stating. If I hit a chip to within two feet, than I'll one putt without doing anything special. If I two putt from 60 feet, I'll have a nice putting hole but will show 2 putts. I'd try to focus on practicing the 4-10 foot putts the most, and avoiding 3 putts. It could be helpful to track your putting on each hole by writing down the distance of your first putt, and how many putts it takes to hole out.
