Maui Golf Trip: Wailea Best Resorts?

I've stayed in Wailea many times and I would suggest the Gold and Emerald courses at Wailea. There are many hotels to choose from close to Wailea including Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, Andaz, etc. If you and your wife like happy hours Gannon's at the Wailea Golf Courses has a really great one from 3 to 8 every day. Monkeypod in Wailea has two happy hours from 3 to 5:30 and from 9 to 11. Both have really good food and drinks. Wailea usually isn't windy like Kapalua.

We stayed at Four Seasons last fall in Wailea on Maui. I wanted to get one casual round in with my wife tagging along so I played the Emerald at Wailea Golf Club as it is very close by. This course was recommended as the views were the best of the three courses. The Emerald course plays very, very easy. Can't speak to the Blue or Gold courses. Great pro shop and facility and lunch spot there as well.

Oh and yes the wind does not hit Wailea like it does with Kapalua.

We've been to Wailea twice. We stayed at the Four Seasons on our honeymoon back in 2005, then this past March at the Grand Wailea. Both are really nice - I prefer the Four Seasons, but the Grand Wailea is probably better if you have any kids with you. Play both the Gold and the Emerald courses if you can. Gold is more challenging, Emerald is more fun. They used to have a deal where you could buy a card for three rounds that was much cheaper than paying the standard rate. I've loved Maui both times we've been. It's a beautiful place.

Having played on Maui two separate trips, I would highly recommend skipping the resort courses and play the local courses, Makena is $65 or so and better than any resort course at Kapalua or Wailea,

Is Makena private? Doesn't like their website has been updated recently but it says this:

Expect the celebratory re-launch of Mākena Golf Course in the latter months of 2015 as a private course.

Gonna be in Maui the first week of August and was thinking of playing the Gold and Emerald courses, but they recently called and explained that they're punching the greens on Gold the last week of July.

Edit: This website (April 2016) also states that Makena Golf & Beach Club was bought out and was going to be converted into a private beachfront community and golf club.

AFAIK, part of Makena is toast, and the other part is now private.

Wailea Gold is a nice track but also overpriced and overrated (simply no truly memorable holes and a fairly boring layout overall). The Emerald course is slightly more dramatic, cheaper, and easier, so it's your best bet if you're only going to play 1 resort round. Wailea Blue is mainly for service industry workers on Maui, and I think most of us here would find it underwhelming next to its better-conditioned siblings to the south.

Maui Nui is an expensive-ish public option with some interesting rolling terrain.

If you're up for a 30-45 minute drive, I can recommend the following courses:

  • Pukalani Country Club — public-access course sits on the slope of Haleakala volcano and has a unique aesthetic among Maui tracks
  • Dunes at Maui Lani — tough course with a serpentine out-and-back routing and a few blind shots
  • King Kamehameha — expensive, one-of-a-kind experience with a Frank Lloyd Wright clubhouse; front 9 is typically dry, and the back 9 is typically wet due to the way weather passes over Maui's western volcano
  • Waiehu — Kahului's muny situated along the northern coast; oceanfront holes, cool views, and few tourists!

With all of that said, there's only one place I'll ALWAYS play when I go to Maui—Kapalua Plantation. Few courses in the world can match its vistas, excitement, and remarkable holes, and to top it off, the Plantation Grill offers some of the best food on the island (and this is not an exaggeration in the least).

Gold and the Emerald are solid courses in Wailea, we go every other year and stay at the Four Seasons. I wouldn't say Wailea is blocked from wind, instead the wind patterns are different on that side of the island. Mornings are calm and sunny, afternoons (12-1) the winds start to pick up, clouds rolls, and maybe a few rain drops. Kapulua has more sun and the winds are usually a constant.

Makena is even better now than before ... unfortunately, its private now so harder to play.

Depending on where you are staying you can get a call in, the Four Seasons recently called me in. The did a great job on the course. I've been going to Wailea for many years and had no idea it was there until we took a snorkeling trip recently and the trip left from the beach at Makena.

We've been to all the islands more than once and we avoid Maui due to the crowds. I highly recommend playing both Lanai courses.

I was! Played Kahili. Rented clubs and booked the course through Jimmy’s Maui. I only played once though, if I played more, I’d have brought my own bag.
