Why do caddies always lay the staff bags down?

The bags get tired and need a nap? :-p

Honestly, dunno. Could just be personal preference.

Are they unsteady in wind? Is there no desire to have a stand mechanism built on those huge bags?

Just curious. Thanks.

In case they fall down. A bag lying on the ground cannot fall and make a noise. A bag stood up can.

Can't imagine that there is much desire to add a stand to a bag which already weighs enough as it is.

This. In the fairway or the tee box the caddie is standing with the bag so they can make sure it won't fall down. Greenside they have other responsibilities that take them away from the bag so they lay them down so they don't have the possibility of falling over while someone is putting.

Potential energy and all.

I do remember a caddy letting the bag drop while his player was about to putt. Player had to back off and he eventually missed. I think it was Chad Campbell, actually

I think the caddy actually fell in the water in the incident I posted about. I'll have to consult the gooooogles.

Sorry, I had to open this thread just to make sure it was real!

It's only real...if you believe.

you guys with all due respect are underestimating engineers if you think a stand mechanism couldn't be added that would prevent bag from falling. Weight I don't know about but they have stand bags with stands that are 2.5 lbs total now. If they don't think it's hard on their back fine no biggie.

They seem to manage in high level amateur tourneys and NCAA okay.

I'm not that worried about my bag falling onto grass and damaging my clubs but I'm certainly not the player Richard is so I will defer to his expertise about those effects.

Keeping in mind the negative comments on here during the NCAA's about players with stand bags and carts, is there any sort of prohibition to lightweight stand bags on tour? Is it just tradition and preference? If my Callaway stand bag is any indication, there seems like there is plenty of room for ads on stand bags.

I remember following Lee Trevino around a Champions tournament many years ago back when his long-time caddy and friend, Herman Mitchell was still working with Lee. Herman was markedly overweight, had a serious heart condition and diabetes. It was hot and somewhat humid. He was sweating profusely. I thought Herman might drop right then and there. A lighter bag certainly would have helped him. I bet one might help Fluff Cowen on Jim Furyk's bag too, not that he is in poor health. Thoughts?

Hope this answers some questions

1.) The bags are heavy yes, but not so heavy you can't carry them. You may not want to, but if you're potentially going to make a good bit of coin doing it then it's not bad...the straps are comfy too

2.) There's really no point in a stand for a staff bag. It's just an unnecessary feature. Why go through the act of standing it up when you can't just lay it down. Not enough hassle to warrant a stand

3.) Nobody is forced to use a big staff bag but if you are truly prepared for everything on the golf course, you will use one. I never realized just how much I was missing out on until I was given one. Every pocket in my Titleist bag has a use and although it is a big bag it is very efficient.

No more do I take my umbrella and rain gear out to make space if I think it won't rain, no longer are my snacks squished by god knows what in the big community pouch of my old stand bag, things are neatly organized in my staff bag, etc. it's almost as essential as my routine on the course because I believe in keeping your world on the golf course clean and organized. I couldn't keep my bag organized while also keeping all my essentials for the round

Mccan1-thanks for taking time to answer. Following your tour thread with great interest. Good luck!

I disagree obviously on point 2.

Bags are heavy enough that laying them down and picking them up is bad for the back. A stand would obviate some of the strain of people would then not need to bend over and pick up heavy objects. I don't really care but was just curious why they were laying them down. I get that if a gust occurs, it might fall down but a good stand would minimize risk of that. Just curious if any other reason.

Along the same lines, no matter how comfy the strap, it's not better for the back than two straps. I don't know if the balance points are different in the staff bags but I bet they could figure out a way to make the double strap work if enough people asked. It may be more traditional Dan male stubbornness--nothing wrong with those things.

Clearly I'm the only one in the entire golfwrx community who thinks about these things. Will let it go. :)

Again my thanks for offering up your observations.

Best wishes to you to be successful.

There are plenty of caddies out there using two straps but there are also some who think that the two straps are actually worse for the back and posture and for that reason, they swap shoulders when carrying the bag.

caddies need a break......imagine if the players carried their bags? no way tiger wins 14 majors carrying his own bag.....they are heavy!!!

Tiger was jacked like an NFL linebacker and trained like a Navy SEAL though. He probably would have won 20 majors if his weakling competitors also had to carry.

Roadhouse.
