Is Johnny going to laugh of Justin's 63 because it's not a "real" US Open course? Too many under par rounds to count. It's like a regular tour event.

I say yes. He did it with an incredible 2nd on 18.

Who cares what Miller thinks about JT's excellent round.

I say yes. He did it with an incredible 2nd on 18.

He already released a statement about it and, yes, he basically said Thomas was playing a course that wasn't really a US Open course. I happen to agree with him. I think Miller's 63 was better. It was at Oakmont. In the final round. To win. Doesn't get much better. The only 63 to match it in my mind was Henrik's 63 in the final round to outduel Phil at Troon.

If JT goes on to win tomorrow, the historical significance goes up a notch.

He most certainly will laugh. Definitley not the same 63.

Well, you have to remember that nearly two inches of rain fell overnight at Oakmont before the final round in 1973, and the greens were much more receptive for Johnny's 63. A young Lanny Wadkins shot a 65 that day.

Don't get me wrong, Oakmont played very tough that week, even on Sunday. Most of the guys shot in the mid 70's in that final round, and I'm sure the field scoring average that day was around 75. Only four guys broke 70. But Johnny likely does not shoot his 63 without a little favor from Mother Nature. :)

One more reason to dislike Johnny Miller.

Every time I think Johnny's round was maybe just a great round.. I go back and look at the clubs he used and think about the course he shot it on. Yeah, greatest round ever. Period.

If touring pros can't put up good scores in soft, receptive conditions, you've built a bad golf course.

Erin Hills will be a different animal if the wind blows tomorrow. But a 63 is a 63 at a major, no matter the course.

I'm getting tired of the "it's just another tour event" narrative going around just because it's not a bloodbath. This is a monster of a course, and these guys are playing great. And you have a mix of playing styles at the front.

Comparing Thomas' 63 is like comparing Spieth's scoring at Augusta in 2015 to what Tiger did in '97. Yes, the aggregate scores were there, but Erin Hills and August in 2015 were significantly easier courses for the rest of the field than either Oakmont or Augusta in '97, which is supported by the scoring of the rest of the field.

While Miller boasts far too often and loudly about his 63, he is right that this round did not measure up to the one he posted at Oakmont.

I will bet that Thomas' round today probably isn't even one of the twenty greatest rounds ever played at a US Open.

I agree, this is no Oakmont. However, he should just say great round and leave it at that.

Not a lot you can do to Erin to trick it up. The fairways are just too wide and the fescue won't have time to grow in from where they cut it on Wednesday. About the only thing they can do is set the tees back as far as they'll go and tuck the pins. And that won't be enough. They'll need some help from Mother Nature.

Contrary to a widespread but erroneous impression — as attested by the reports of the U.S. Weather Service and major newspapers in western Pennsylvania — the only considerable rainfall during the 1973 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, prior to the third round. 18 of 68 guys broke 70 on a par 72 course.

17 guys shot 75 or higher.

Even on a day like today where the course was gettable, it's not like everyone was shooting 65.
