Do you carry a Lob wedge or is 56 Degree enough?

Been carrying 52* and 58* for sometime now. Before carried 53* and 59*, and before that was 53* and 60*. With 47* PW and 9i I can make any shot around any green complex.

I carry a LW but my buddy does not (goes up to 56* and carries 3w hybrid, plus 3-PW). I feel like I really like having a 60* for those times where you really need to pop one up in the air high and get it to stop. It might only come along once every 36 or 72 holes, but it's so nice to have when you need it.

Lately I've started chipping more with my 52 and 56 and leaving the 60 in the bag unless I've stumbled into really deep stuff around the greens. Instead of trying to be cool and get the ball to check on a dime with that 30 yard chip, I choose to play a 52 or even a PW and only fly it half or 1/4 of the way. Much more consistent results for me off the muni fairways and non tour balls.

OP, of course you could get away with bagging just a 56*. People did it for a long time prior to the development of a lob wedge (I believe it was an X wedge at the time??). For many decades prior to that there were no sand wedges. But courses are different now, and I'm not sure why you wouldn't want the lob wedge in the bag. There are too many shots that modern courses call for where a 58+* wedge helps to more easily execute on a more frequent basis. I know there is the "play to your strengths" discussion in here somewhere as well, but I am from the school of thought where a lob wedge (60* for me) is a tool that is too valuable to exclude. If one is not comfortable or confident, then repetition can fix that. Ultimately, I am convinced this is a better approach than simply dropping 2 scoring clubs in favor of one in order to have less decisions to make on the course.

If you do decide to go 56* as your highest loft, I strongly recommend the Callaway MD PM Grind.

That's pretty much what I use right now, 45 pw, 50 gw, and Glide 58 ES grind. I also have a 55* set wedge, but I rarely use it since getting the Glide. I'd be perfectly happy if the glide was a 56.

Yes, I like having it in the bag if I need it. I do use the 56 for most shots around the green, but I mix it up between my gap and lob depending on what is needed. I use both sand and lob from the traps depending on where the flag is and slope.

my 60* is hardly seeing any play unless it's a close pin in a green side bunker. even at that my previous 58* could have done the trick. I could not hit my 56* out of the fairway or around the green on my last round - literally shanked 2 balls out of the same spot. my 52* is becoming my favorite club on approach shots or around the green so i'm thinking of getting a 58* and moving out the 56 & 60.

I have carried a LW for years. It's my go-to club for greenside bunkers, bad lies next to the green, and if I need to hit a high shot that will hold the green. I have actually tried doing without it in the past to add a 2 iron - no dice.

I absolutely love mine and it's staying in the bag.

I carry a 46* pw 54* sw and a 60* lw.

46* 120 - 135 yard shot

54* 95 - 120 yard shot

60* under 95 yard (Most of the time unless a low running shot is needed)

I moved away from 4 wedges to 3 a few months ago and my wedge play has got alot better. Started dialling in my 3/4 wedge shots.

My LW is my go to club. Can play high flops, low checking chip shots, 3/4 shots that stop dead etc. That clubs is defo not going anywhere.

I always walk and don't miss the extra wedge. I think there is no right answer, just get those different shots dialled in with each club. Less options have helped me alot with being more positive standing over the ball and not second guessing if this is the right club etc. Hope this helps.

Just wonder how many (especially walkers) carry a lob wedge I been carrying 54, 58

and struggle using the right tool for the job sometimes, Thinking maybe going 56 and spending more time

with it inside of 100 yd. instead of bouncing between 54, 58. What your thoughts?

Thanks

I have a 56 & 62. I like the lob wedge for soft, dead-stop landings inside 40 yards. The 56 is more for sand, thick grass, and full shots @80 yards

I'm a big fan of the 60. My wedge set is 48-52-56-60, and I use the 60 a lot around the greens and from the bunkers. Super versatile for me.

Having a "gap" at the longer end of the club set is definitely not a problem for me. I save a lot more strokes with good, versatile wedge play than I ever would having one extra longer club for that 230-250 range.

50, 54, 58 after years of just PW and 56. I LOVE the 54 for most everything. I can get my 100 yds completely in control where the 56 I tend to go after it and get out of rhythm. 58 I generally use for sand and lob shots. After learning how to use the bounce from the Monte vid I can hit it off any lie comfortably. Tight lies especially if I have to.

I carry a 60 LW, it is used only for short game when I am short sided. I used it three times this past Sunday, the three rounds prior to that I didn't use it at all. I think it is a very useful tool for me, but I play a high bounce sand wedge and I am not comfortable getting under the ball cleanly when I open the face on a tight lie.

Play on a hard linksy/heathland course so no real need to go high and floppy so no 60 for me...

Last year was 52 and 58 with cleveland 588s - used the 52 for most chipping and pitching - 58 for bunker and really short sided situations -

Moved to 52 and 56 SM6 this year and now the 56 is the go-to club with M-grind making the club really versatile - 52 now for 80-100 pitching.

I have 4 wedges even though the PW and AW are strong as heck. 43.5, 49, 54, 60. Pretty happy with my bag setup. Even though I do want to upgrade my m2 irons to something better as my game has gotten better. Those PSI irons looks amazing!
