Worst one time PGA tour winner ever

Thrillhouse

Recommended Posts

Quick google and John Merrick's game has tanked since his win. That said still $9mil+ career earnings.

Oh! Just to cover the inevitable:

What have you done? How many wins you got? You think you're a PGAer? These guys are all awesome and have done more then you'll ever do in your entire little pathetic live. Worst? Still not worser than you! You worster.

... or something to that effect.

Orville Moody. and it was the US Open. So maybe he wasn't the worst but considering a major was his only win I think he wins the award for outkicking his coverage by the largest margin for one time winners.

Maybe Derek Ernst, won quite a big one a few years ago, the Wells Fargo Champ, beating the ultimate European Tour journeyman David Lynn in a strange playoff. There were terrible greens and a number of players withdrew before the tournament. Weather conditions were awful, and Rory, Westwood fell down on the back nine. Mickelson was the worst, was leading the whole time then bogeyed his way in to miss out on a playoff. So Ernst never really had any big pressure to deal with as nobody expected him to win, even when he finished. Then beat Lynn with a par on the playoff after Lynn messed up.

He was 4th alternate and 1200 in the world rankings at the time. Has already lost his card since. Currently outside the world's top 800.

I feel like we're gonna stumble upon someone who has like $500,000 in career earnings from their one win and like $48 for the rest of their PGA tour career.

Someone has to have one win and then nothing else.

John Morse - 1995 Hawaii Open winner (the year Wie played): $216k for that $1.3mil career

In fairness with the exemptions that come with a win, figure it's got to be tough to find a player who couldn't get some more monies.

Si Woo Kim

Two wins on the PGA Tour

Yeah and nearly $5.5 million in earnings over the last season and a half. Not too shabby for 21YOSWK

What I'm thinking is it would be someone who won his rookie year but hardly made a cut otherwise, then played awful the next two years when he had an exemption and fell off completely.

Good call on Derek Ernst to this point, but he's a young guy he can come back, and while I enjoy the conversation these threads generate I'm not trying to disparage anyone (although someone will surely suggest otherwise lol).

Orville Moody was a great ballstriker but a poor putter. The long putter helped him a lot when he got to the senior tour. And he was a good guy and people liked him.

I always like Sam Parks in these threads. A local guy who won the 1935 US Open at Oakmont and no other tour events, though back then, the tour wasn't as organized as now. He won his state open, and the local PGA of America event, that isn't considered a tour precursor.

Don't know if this qualifies, but Bill Rogers. He won the British Open back in 1981 and earned next to nothing after that until he retired 6 - 8 years later. I think he earned less than $8,000 in that time. I read about him quite a while ago, so my numbers might a wee bit off. I know google is my friend, but... :-)

Rogers won 6 times on the PGA Tour including 2 more wins in 1981 after the Open. 4 wins total in 1981. He won his last event in 1983.
