Tiger's drug problem?

I found it very interesting that Tiger's quote stated that he's seeking professional help to "Manage" his prescriptions. This quote tells me that he had a complete lack of humility and ability to be honest about an addiction that is very deadly. As a former drug addict, one doesn't manage a drug problem. Not to mention, Tiger recently tweeted that he was so excited to have NO pain after the surgery. Yet weeks later, he had he was pulled over with drugs in his system including Vicodin and Zanax. This combo is a potentially leathal combination of drugs yet he felt compelled to drive. I'm quite sure, clearly, that this wasn't the first time he has used the drugs. Bottom line, you don't manage a drug problem. You either have a problem or you don't. I hope he finds the humility to be honest and fortitude to call a spade a spade. His problem is a disease and a very deadly one. I've been down this road personally. I wish him the best but his commentary on what his plans to manage his drug use do not invoke confidence.

If you had a drug problem how much would you have enjoyed laying it bare for the world to see and scrutinise? We have no given right to know anything about his issues it's for him his family and friends, and he can basically say what he likes publicly because it's none of our business anyway and certainly won't reflect the truth of the issues.

Finally, a new Tiger's Problem Thread.

We haven’t seen a “problem” thread for a while now.

The last one was an "issue" thread.

The two prior to that were “concern” threads.

Then a “temporary setback” thread.

Then a really good “defensive” thread.

And how can we forget that “GOAT” thread?

Then there was “better father-figure” thread featuring commentary about Earl Woods versus Wayne Gretzky.

That "quote" is not a quote directly from Tiger. its a quote from a PR team that's paid millions. You're right its not his first time because its been documented that this is his third time in treatment and second for prescription drugs. Either way what is PR team says and what he thinks is probably completely different and we will probably never know what he is actually thinking.

I missed the part where he owes it to you to tell you what his problem is.

Generally I would agree with you, but......once Tiger got behind the wheel, under the influence, he put everyone else on the road in danger and thus loses his right to privacy.

He made his private business public.

I find this thread to be nothing more than a thinly veiled swipe at Tiger. The guy has serious issues. I don't know why people on here feel they need to kick him while he's down or insist they know everything about what is going on.

Exactly, the quote is from his PR team to provide damage control to the reports that he's in drug rehab.

Tiger has no obligation nor should there be any expectations of him to admit to drug addiction (if he is) to the world. Recovering addicts are asked to acknowledge their problem to themselves, their family, friends and those they seek help from.

We've had several of these threads and they end up locked.

There have been some really insightful comments and genuine sympathy and support for TW - But then they inevitably devolve into nonsense and a Wrx Marshall gets involved.

OP ... while I agree that addiction is a serious problem, the issue (with all due respect) is not as black and white as you portray it. There is a reason why heavy duty painkillers are legal to prescribe. They kill pain.

Tiger's had knee surgeries, 4 different back surgeries (can't even imagine that). The pain from this stuff can be positively excruciating. Just saying "I'm an addict, so I'm not going to take pain medication" is not really an option for some folks. So "managing prescriptions" actually makes sense.

My own opinion? You are an addict if you take pain medication when there's no reason to. (I recently took percs for about a week. Had oral surgery, and they were a godsend. But stopped when the pain stopped). The opiod crisis in this country really is serious - and the common progression is that a person first takes them for a legitimate reason, then gets hooked, then moves to heroin (or something like it) when they can no longer get drugs legally. This really is terrible. And everything you talk about in your post applies.

But it is easy to forget that for people that have serious pain, opiods are the only thing that lets them get through the day.

He was wrong to drive (and every prescription says you should not drive when you take them). But I do not think his statement showed a lack of humility - quite the opposite - it showed an honest recognition that he has pain management issues that he has to deal with.

Tiger was the greatest human being on earth in terms of his ability to play golf. But in the end he is just a human like the rest of us, and like many people I know is addicted to pain killers or other prescription drugs. I know people at all levels of addiction, and it usually affects their personal like and sometimes your life its self. I know someone who destroyed their family and then killed themselves, I know people who have failed marriages, and other personal problems that all go back to RX drug use.

You want to know whats going on in Tiger's life? just look around you, at work, at friends, at family and I am pretty sure you will realize what he is going through.

He made his business public in relation to the arrest not in relation to any other aspect of his life be it addiction or whatever. I can't understand how anyone would make that leap.

I only meant he made his substance abuse issue a public matter, not his recovery. He is entitled to privacy during that process.
