What's Next for Jones Golf Bags? (2017 & Beyond)

Recommended Posts

Jones is one of my favorite golf brands out there these days. I've been a huge fan for awhile now, and I always get that itch to see what great companies are planning to do next. So to satisfy my curiosity...

Anyone out there have any idea on what their next move is? A new bag prototype (maybe a little bigger)? Building on or improving the designs they have already? Any insight would be awesome!

I love my two original Jones carry bags.

I believe that their stand and cart type bags really deviate from the original mission. However, companies need to keep up with the times in order to be competitive in the economy.

Most golfers wouldn't think of using a carry bag. I don't personally know ANYONE else who has a Jones.

Huge and gaudy bags have been "IN" for a long time. Carry bags are as rare as kilties on golf shoes.

Hey, whatever floats the boat.

I love the idea of the Jones Bags. I just wish they would make a four or five place top with a 9 inch opening in the style of the original stand bag. I know, I know. Jones is known for small, minimalist, old school bags. Maybe just a little larger opening and keep the rest of the old school. Please?

The Jones Utility Stand bag is a great bag! I had the Greyson for a short stint until it was taken over by a family member. I was planning on ordering a replacement and the only reason I have hesitated is the hope that a 2018 model will have a larger opening. With a 8 1/2 or 9" top I believe Jones would have a hard time keeping these in stock, they are that nice of a bag. I squeezed 14 clubs in the bag, however with a super stroke putter grip it was not always as simple as I would have liked to pull a club. The bag carries very well the quality is outstanding and the simplistic, but functional styling is superb, only drawback as stated is the opening size.

I had a brief conversation with the owner and tried to convince him to build a simple, lighter bag with either a bigger opening or use the single divider similar to the Stitch SL1. They feel that Stitch knocked them off. I was left with the impression they will not change the traditional design and will just change fabrics and colors. I mentioned my thoughts that a Jones bag with similar qualities as SM/Stitch (3 to 3.5 lbs, minimal pockets, single strap etc.) with a lower price point, I felt would steal a market segment from SM or Stitch. Even the SM 2.5+ is around 3 lbs now. Love my Greyson and Jones Rider but truly wish for a stylish, simple, cool factor, 3 lb solution for about $225. Going with 14 clubs (P2 aware midsize putter grip) in my Greyson is a bit stuffed so I carry 12 or 13. Not a big deal but when I want all options I admit it bugs me a tad and my mind goes back to using Vice Force or heaven forbid a Hoofer :-). Main reason I hesitate to change is balance. The Jones Utility carries sooo much lighter than 5 lbs. Just give me a slightly bigger top or one less divider... <my $.02 cents>

That's very interesting! Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I do not care for the SL1 at all. I feel like Jones definitely has the edge in the market. I've said it for a couple years now, keep everything the same in the stand bag/utility series - just have an 8.5"-9" opening/body and it would blow away not only Stitch, but put a dent in the sales of several other golf bag manufacturers. I understand tradition thought - it is a hard thing to argue. Jones has an aura about it that is nostalgic, modern, and different all at the same time.

Regarding the SL1 I agree. I returned mine and bought the Greyson. Still, the SL1 looks pretty sweet. Because of the single divider it holds 14 clubs easier then the utility bag however, the balance is not as good as the Jones...in my opinion on the stitch. So yes, Jones may have a big opening if they see it as we (the consumers) do.

I agree with all of the above. Any idea of any new colors being introduced into 2018..hoping for a Navy in the Utility bag.

Jones just posted on their Instagram today that they only had five of the Olive utility bag left, with no plans to make more. Also mentioned that there's three new colors coming out this spring.

I like the Olive bag, however I am not sure what head covers I would pair with it. I know very OCD of me.

I get it, I’m just as ocd. I ordered one because I’ve been eyeing it for a while. Going with a combo of Seamus covers in dark gray/black tones.

I think the Seamus grey wool/herringbone covers with the olive bag would look awesome!

I have been considering getting a Jones stand bag for a year+ but as mentioned above, I really wish the opening was slightly larger.... I'd be really frustrated if I pulled the trigger on one, and then a few months later they release one with a slightly larger opening.

I'm telling you, there's a TON of us wanting this. We're only asking for another inch..............

I really want to say something else along with this very true statement, but I'm 30 now.....

The Jones Utility bags are of the highest quality, they carry very well, they are perfectly balanced and offer plenty of storage. For those who are concerned 14 clubs will fit in the Utility stand bag, however if you use a super stroke or similar type putter grip, it makes things difficult when you want to easily pull a club. If you are a mid-sized or oversized grip user you may consider things just a little too cramped and may want to consider other options. I don't remember the exact opening size I want to say 7 3/4" even 8" would be beneficial, however a 8-1/2" or 9" opening would put this bag on a new level head and shoulders above what else is out there. .

While I dont use a superstroke on my putter, all of my club grips are midsize (golf pride mcc+4) and thats what concerns me. I'll more than likely be just fine but expanding to 8.5" or 9" - I would already be gaming a Jones haha

When's the best best time to buy a Jones bag? I've seen that they typically run a Black Friday sale. Does that offer the best discount or are there other sales that also pop up during the year?

The black Friday is usually discounted 40%, I think. Worth the wait. Earlier this year, Jones had some kind of grab bag sale, on bags and other stuff. I ordered a random original carry bag. for $60. I got a black & white bag, no flaws I could discern, fantastic bag. There was a thread about others getting stuff that had been monogramed or had logos sewed on. I guess I was lucky.

I've been carrying my bag all year, and no wear whatsoever. I'm actually very surprised, for the material seems lightweight. Must be some space age material, like some mailing envelopes are made of. Impossible to tear.

PS: I also have a grey US Open bag, bought at full price, a few years back. It's so nice, I don't use it much.

They still have some of those grab bag deals for duffel bags / shag bags / backpacks right now - some pretty good deals as long as you don't get some crazy embroidery.

Bag came in today! As well as a Mossy Oak Seamus putter cover I scored on eBay. It matched the bag so well that I couldn’t pass it up.

Great looking bag. I was thinking of getting one. Looks like you have 13 clubs in there, is it roomy enough or a bit tight and how's club tangle?

Like the FW cover, is that a Seamus?

My 14th club was in for repair at the time of the photo. I used the bag walking for 9 holes friday and on a cart for 18 on saturday. I plan on posting a more in depth review in my WITB post this week, after I can use it some more. Thus far, I love it.

All covers are Seamus, except the driver which is a cleveland I found on eBay. Fairway is called "Hebridean Mist" and the hybrid is "The Countryman".

Interested in hearing more about your experience with the bag now that you've had it for a while. Do the legs tuck nicely up against the bag when retracted? Saw a review of the Utility on Aussie golfer and the legs looked like they were dangling a bit - hate it when you get a stand bag that does that.
