European Tour Golf Courses

I have played in Europe, and the courses were great. Why is it that every course the European Tour plays on looks like a boring municipal course? I do not know if it is the billboards all over the place, lack of fans, shaggy fairways and greens, but it just seems boring.! Does anybody else feel this way?

I know what you mean, but I think the European Tour has its own feel. It's different from the PGA Tour, but not necessarily boring. It seems to lack the 'flare' of the PGA Tour, but some would argue that they prefer it that way.

lol it's true. The 19 billboards bordering every green is my personal favorite.

Love ET courses...it's just great to see other parts of the world. Heck even the small tournament a few weeks ago in Sicily where Quiros won, that course was beautiful with its holes running along the Mediterranean.

theres the spirit

I agree on the billboard thing, but they got to make money somehow.

I'm sure the European Tour is getting the best courses they can, maybe lack of courses agreeing to host is the problem.

I'm sure if building a TPC of Germany, Italy, Holland etc. made business sense, the European Tour would have gone that route.

But for the next month, the European Tour is definitely the place to be.

The Munich track is a bore fest. But as BMW are based in Munich.....the problem with a lot of Europe's elite tracks is they are tree lined, nowhere near main transport hubs and the affluent members don't want the great unwashed tramping round their private courses....France has three stunning courses in Seignoise, Morfontaine and Les Bordes,,,,just don't expect a game on any of them soon.....

There are already the equivalent of TPCs in Europe, they are called "European Tour Properties", such as PGA Catalunya, Le Golf National, The Dutch, Terre Blanche...

Be packed in Paris next week, plus it's the ryder cup venue. Then it's the Irish, Scottish opens before Birkdale. All will have 1000s especially Birkdale, which gets the highest attendances of any open venue.

But I do agree that some of the courses aren't the best and poorly supported at times, but that happened because it's all over the place. When it's in the UK like many use to be eg belfry, forest of arden, Sunningdale, Woburn the British just pack it out like all sporting events.

Sadly, I think the European Tour lost some if it's soul when moving away from the UK when it use to have huge tour events.

Not even close. It's clear you don't watch much ET golf.

Yeah try playing some European courses, hitting it offline or trying to get out of pot bunkers. Some of the most boring courses in the world are in America. Absolutely no challenge other than being long.

But. But. The majority of the courses they play aren't links courses and they rarely have pot bunkers. Love me some links golf though.

München Eichenried is a pretty nice course I'd say. Also as others have mentioned we still have Irish, French and Scottish Open left. British Masters at Close House and the Omega European Masters in Crans will be played on great courses, too.

Yeah, the European Tour has several wonderful courses on its schedule. I love the South African venues, especially Leopard Creek.

Same here. The Diamond Course, where they play the (Lyoness) Austrian Open is relatively nice to play and provides excitement in terms of scoring in the tour event, but it is not nice to look at. There are a few courses around Vienna, which are a lot more beautiful and would look stunning on TV, but they could not handle a European Tour event, and also the members would not want it.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Depends really. I was talking to someone about this the other week. I think it depends a great deal on the Country being played in. I'm not sure some nations really like golf enough to go watch. Also, a lot of European courses are relatively new, compared to those in the States. And maybe the weather doesn't lead to really green and exotic grasses. You could sort out the crowds and course issues easily enough with just having a British tour - but we'd never win the Ryder Cup, although with Fleetwood, Casey, Rose, Rory etc we might not need those pesky Europeans anymore ;)

Look out for Grans Montana, the dunhill at st andrews, carnoustie & kingsbarns, and valderama all to come on top of the rolex series events in Ireland, Scotland, both played on great courses, and different to the run of the mill driver wedge we see week in and week out on both tours.

in regards to the advertising boards, remember that we only have 4 short commercial breaks an hour here, I understand in the states you have a lot more than that, so its a great way of raising profile, more money via tournament, than via TV CBS/Golf Channel.

I'll admit I'm a noob to being addicted to golf, but please explain what South Africa has to do with European golf. If we're talking continents, it seems as far away as it can be from Europe. Well, slightly closer than North America, but still far.
