Rory quits Twitter after exchange with Elkington

I don't understand why established guys like Rory continue to engage via social media. It's a nice tool for up and coming guys to build a brand and twilight players to remain relevant, but it inevitably does more damage than good. Especially for a guy like Rory who would probably be best served by concerning himself with nothing except his family and winning majors.

I didn't think his response was that bad. People don't like him quoting his earnings or whatever because it seems insensitive to fans maybe? But it's not like we don't know what he makes, it's public knowledge, why can't he boast about it when some dude insults him

He hasn't quit just taking a break... no timetable for his return to twitter.

Good move on Rors part (his wife had something to do with it I believe). Social media is generally a pretty toxic environment. Playing on tour (any tour) is hard enough without having to deal with every sniveling whine, wannabe, or troll on the planet. I am not sure the good could ever outweigh the bad and it is an annoyance that diverts attention away from the important things in life.

The best users on social media, and this site, are the ones who make posts and never read/respond to the follow up comments. No need to give them any attention, good or bad. Rory has nothing to prove.

Social media is a great way to gain access to our stars, which does nothing but help the profile of golf. I don't see why running a top-player and fan favorite like Rory off of twitter is something to be applauded or why we'd encourage others to follow suit?

It's much easier said than done, but FromPartsUnknown hit the nail on the head - don't take the bait, do your thing and don't respond to negative comments.

Agreed. Rory's Nike contract alone is probably 10x Elk's lifetime tour earnings.

Makes no sense, Rors clearly came out on top of the Elk feud, he's good on twitter, approachable and that's part of the reason people and the media seem to love Rory. I think it's a poor decision on his part, but it doesn't really matter what I think, plus he doesn't need the extra attention that some other guys can gain through twitter. I've become huge fans of guys like Kisner and Zac Blair solely because of how great they utilize social media and how they interact. If you can filter through the garbage it is a wonderful tool and can only help.

Totally agree. Rory's banter is bottom tier. You really need to bring a good bantz game when you're going up against an Australian. Everyone knows Australians have world-class shitlording and bantz. Hopefully Rory takes a break and comes back with a better game.

You would if a baseless claim impacted your business negatively .... as most do. What amazes me is that most people seem to follow social media as if it were the all telling truth.

And therein lies the problem, that people believe they should have access to the private and personal lives of sports stars and media celebrities.
