Two involve the PAT. I was caddying for a friend and a guy was way clear of the number on the 35th hole. Tight par 5 and he has at least 4 shots to spare. Pulls out the driver, we kind of wince but he nails it dead center. Green is guarded by a creek and ob. Out comes the 3 wood. In the creek, ok drop, pitch on and limp home, still no problem. Nope - into the creek he goes. Slash, whiff. Slash, plug in the mud. Hack dislodges the ball, still in the hazard. Next one gets skulled ob. By this time a rules guy had arrived and the player was a disaster. He dropped for what is now his tenth or so, and he just broke down. Keep in mind this is after his drop, ball is in the hazard and in play and he's blubbering like a teenage girl after prom night. He sits down in the hazard, club in hand. After he gets up and finally gets the ball out the official tells him to add 2 more for grounding his club in a hazard. I think he made a 15 and missed by 5. When I say it was awesome to watch I don't mean it was fun or good, the scale of this meltdown was awe some.

On the other end when I took my PAT I got paired with a guy I knew from college golf. He was a terrific guy but had borderline ability to pass, I knew he needed to play well, I never saw him break 75 as long as I knew him. He mostly played #5 for an naia team but he loved golf. He was playing fine, I think he shot 78 in the morning and the number was 155 to pass. He started out the afternoon hitting 3 ob off #1. He rallied and passed on the number, he played the next 4 hours right on the bubble and kept making pars, the occasional birdie then more pars. I was very proud of this guy when we finished and we had a lot of beers together after that round. It was truly impressive to see him play better than he ever had for so long, after the 3 ob he was 2 under for the round once he got one in play, basically 4 hours of grinding. He became a great golf professional and is well liked by his members and staff. Still can't play a lick though :).
