Golf Digest story on Mickelson/insider trading

Recommended Posts

Saw this in my hard copy of Golf Digest that arrived last week. Haven't seen it on their website yet. It's written by Jeffrey Toobin, legal analyst at CNN rather than a golf writer. Crux of the story is Mickelson escaped prosecution due to fortuitous timing. An appeals court had ruled in another case during the investigation before charges were brought that a third individual receiving insider information (not directly from the tipper) could not be charged; after the trial began the U.S. Supreme Court reversed that decision. I may be oversimplifying but that's what I was able to take from the story.

I was surprised at the potential prison time involved. The Dean Foods board member who provided the information to Billy Walters was facing 160 years before he cooperated with the investigation; Walters is facing 100 years. I guess I was thinking of the time Martha Stewart received for similar charges. Anybody else see this? What are your thoughts?

The article has been online for several weeks. It's okay and looks to be a decent summary EXCEPT Toobin (who should read court opinions much more closely if he is going to draw the conclusions he draws) completely oversimplifies the impact of the Supreme Court's opinion in Salman and how the timing of that opinion would have made a difference in Mickelson's situation. He obviously didn't read it, or didn't understand it, or both.

Be careful all - CNN could start to make threats if we all aren't careful.

I'm kind of shocked there remain so many Phil apologists out there. Degenerate gambler? Check. White collar criminal? Check. Wearer of lipstick in interviews? Check. That's three strikes in my opinion. Let us never forget, the third strike is by far the most egregious:

Mizuno ST 190G w/ Fujikura Motore X F3 6S

Mizuno ST-Z 15° w/ Fujikura Motore X F3 7S

I don't care much for Toobin, he has an agenda/narrative, so anything he says I take with a huge grain of salt. Speaking of Golf Digest, one of their writers kinda suggested that Trump was at fault for Lewis's triple on #11 on day 3, i.e., the F-18 that flew over startled her, which caused her to hit her first pitch shot over the green.

If you have enough money it's pretty tough to be found guilty of anything

And if you have enough fame and success, most don't want you to be found guilty either.

Maybe they'll make a movie about Phil one day.

"The Wolf of Augusta National"

Probably would grow the game better than playing it forward or any of the other ideas.

Honestly y'all , I shouldn't spend time on this non-golf issue, but this is patently false.

BJS showed the mean sentence served for those convicted of murder or nonnegligent manslaughter was just over twenty years. And that's considering nearly 30% of convicts receive life sentences.

Reuters did a study in 2012 that the mean sentence for an insider trading conviction was 17.3 months.

If you want to talk about the dire shape of our country and how things are so bad, stop contributing to ignorance by repeating things that aren't true.
